Nice

One doesn't see fan art for the Witcher very much...

Děkuji.
Neumím ještě moc dobře mluvit česky, so I'll write in English - I saw some good pieces of art here (mainly by artists from Russia, I don't know why ), but there is always not enough I hope this will change when all books are translated into English.

Oh English is fine for me. Do you know some sites with fan art for it? I think there is now some for the games, but I dunno about the books. It's even rare to find someone who knows and read it
.
I think only the short stories and the first book were published in English so far, right?...it takes quite a while. It came out in czech in 1995. I am thinking of buying the English version just to see how it was translated.

I would love to see it as a movie series, in a quality like the LotR...I'm must say I disliked the TV series that came out.

Ugh, the movie and TV series were... well, VERY bad. The comic series were better (although I don't like Polch's style of drawing). I think most of fans dream about better adaptation, but I don't know if someone has enough courage to make it after the film's failure.
As far as I know, second book is to be published in England this year.
Unfortunately I can't remember where I saw the most of fan arts. I remember only ~JustAnoR now; you can also see some on Sapkowski's official site: [link] .

Thanks for the links.

I'm always delighted when I meet someone who likes it. I love Sapkowski's style, I got into it right away, the dialogues and the pacing of action...it's very clever. And I enjoy the humor very much, while at the same time it can make me thrilled or sad.

Very bad yes, I remember when they aired it here on TV years ago, my mom watched one episode and then said: Is this really what you like? ...and said: noooo...the books are so much better!!!!

I hope it will get more popular in the English speaking world, the games might help.

Yeah, I love this style too, Sapkowski is one of my favourite writers. His other books are not so great in my opinion; fortunately in one interview a few days ago he said, that he's working on a new book, and it's action will be set in the world of the witcher.
And I remember when my dad went to the cinema to watch the movie (he likes fantasy a lot ). When he returned, he was like: "NO COMMENT".

I actually like the hussit trilogy he wrote as well, but not as much as the Witcher. Oh it is great news then, I would love to read something from him again, and especially if it's going to be set the Witcher world. Did you notice how Sapkowski kills off most of the characters at the ends of his books? He's evil.
I haven't seen the movie, just some episodes from the beginning of the tv series, but it was so bad, I couldn't continue. ...also about the casting, Geralt was OK, but I couldn't believe who they cast as Jaskier...if someone is supposed to look like an elf...he shouldn't be small and fat..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ankalime In reply to Sasheenka [2012-02-04 10:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, hussit trilogy was good, but just... not so absorbing for me. And his last book, "Żmija" (don't know if it was translated into Czech) was just bad.
Omg, Jaskier. I think they modeled him on the look he had in the comics. I hated it SO MUCH. Surely they thought: "hey, a bard can't be handsome, he should be fat and funny!". ugh. >: (
Hey, Jaskier was translated as "Jaskier" in Czech edition? And just out of curiosity, did the TV series have dubbing?

Sasheenka In reply to ankalime [2012-02-04 11:25:32 +0000 UTC]

I have read Zmija as soon as it came out in Czech. To me it was not entirely bad, the style of writing was the same, but the theme was not at all interesting for me. I miss the elves. With the hussit trilogy...maybe because of the Czech history involved, real historical people...and my genuine interest in history made me enjoy it very much...but the Witcher was more captivating, I just had to keep reading...even when I was on a skying holiday in the Alps, I kept (the last) book on me at all times and whenever we made a break I was reading.
Jaskier is called Marigold in Czech. I like that name. (everything better than Dandelion I think ). But I was so disappointed with the casting in the TV series, it seemed like a joke.
Oh yeah, it had dubbing, most stuff on TV is dubbed here, we have a very good dubbing I think, but I prefer subtitles.

My TV set used to have 3 Czech channels, I was watching it a lot when I was small. It always seemed funny to me, when films (which I knew with original voices) had dubbing. But I guess you can get used to it.
And I think I'm just helpless fantasy lover, and that's why I liked the Witcher the most - it had so much more typical fantasy elements. But like I said, I find hussit trilogy very good. Btw, now I feel that I should re-read it, I finished it looong ago...

Sasheenka In reply to ankalime [2012-02-04 14:08:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh nice. Well I find dubbing easy to get used to when I see the movie dubbed first or if I don´t know how the actor sounds in the original. Otherwise it can sound quite bad.

I'm not a huge fantasy lover even though my favourite books are fantasy...it may seem a bit contradictory. I love Tolkien's and Sapkowski's works, but I have never read any other fantasy

And I love elves. I have finished my Faoiltiarna portrait yesterday night [link] (I can never draw manly men, but I think with elves, it´s safe

Your drawing is really good; I like that scar. And yes, elves are generally not very manly.

Sasheenka In reply to ankalime [2012-02-07 11:01:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Oh I spent plenty of time on the scar. Sapkowski described it every time he mention Faoiltiarna, so it's his main feature...though I didn't want to make it too ugly

A friend told me she started reading the Witcher, but can't find books 4 and 5 in the library, so I'm gonna lend them to her today. I'll get another person to talk to about it, yay!

I am also often lending my Witcher to my friends. We must spread Geralt around the world!

Sasheenka In reply to ankalime [2012-02-07 15:24:54 +0000 UTC]

I had to buy 3 volumes twice, as I've lent it to a girl during the last year of high school and haven't seen her since. Oh well. But yeah, spreading the goodness is wonderful. There are so many wonderful characters in the books. Who are your favorites?

ankalime In reply to Sasheenka [2012-02-07 16:08:59 +0000 UTC]

haha, I see we can discuss about Witcher many many days. but that's good.
I can't decide! Geralt is very good. I liked Cahir so much (and cried over him so much). Also in my opinion Regis is THE AWESOMEST vampire in the whole literature. (hope he didn't really die, author reportedly said that he could regenerate). And Jaskier of course, I think the most likable character in this series.
I didn't like Emhyr at first, but loved him at the end, when he proved to have a good heart. <3
Among the female characters I liked Yennefer (surprisingly) and Ciri the most. They irritated me sometimes, but were alright. It was nice to see the development of their characters. They both matured a lot.
And there are so much more people that I like, but I think these are the most important.

Sasheenka In reply to ankalime [2012-02-07 18:40:33 +0000 UTC]

yeah, most characters are awesome. Of course Geralt and Jaskier are great, without main characters being likable, the books wouldn't be very good. I also love Cahir and Regis, Regis was particularly awesome. I have a soft spot for elves though, so my favorite is Faoiltiarna. I loved the scene with him, the captured guy and the anthill. .

I like the female characters in Sapkowski, which is very rare for me. I like that his women are strong, yet still very feminine.

But I can't understand why so many characters in his books have to die at the end. It was the same in the hussit trilogy...

I did cry at the end of the Witcher...I'm easy to move me to tears with some things.

I love elves too, although I think in this series they are described rather pejoratively. Faoiltiarna was great, I regret he was shown in so few scenes though.
I poured so many tears over these books! TT_TT Sapkowski just can't give us happy ending, it would be too beautiful. He must kill several good characters to achieve his goal.

Coś tu nie gra z nosem, aczkolwiek w kolorze pewnie by wyszło.
