Um... This took me a long time to create! Every time I want to use a KPT plug-in, for example, I have to type in the darned registration code, then repeat the process for every time I open the same, or another effect! Corel - bless them!! - have not upgraded this package, which is for sale at £75 still, and yet will not work properly with the latest programs (nothing later than CS2, or PSP X) or Vista! There's no sign that they are going to do so either...

I want to do a series of Other World Fantasy pictures using mixed media, this being the first. (Difficult to categorise; I guess it fits best into science fiction as this is hardly about faeries!)

All resources my own.

Anna - NOr sure there is a Vista Compatible Version of the Suite Yet... certainly not for Leopard on Mac.... This is another reason why I adore XP more than ever since ousting Vista from my wife's machine.... I still only use the PC .5% of the time (if that).... MIght have to load KPT and Sinedots up on parallels on the Mac which I also run XP Pro on.

That all said I like this image... has shades of another of my favourite artists about it (The artist being Patrick Woodroffe)

Nice One!

AnnaKirsten In reply to Zooreka [2008-06-11 10:57:56 +0000 UTC]

No, when I spoke to a Corel rep on the phone here, they said there didn't seem to be any plans to upgrade the KPT collection, which is a real bummer!

I feel complimented that this piece reminds you of the artwork of Patrick Woodroffe - thank you so much!

Zooreka In reply to AnnaKirsten [2008-06-11 13:32:05 +0000 UTC]

By the way - another problem with KPT in Vista despite the constant hassle of having to reinput the serial is that it does not let you save gradient resets etc (in the likes of Fraxplorer for Example)....

The serial issue only comes into play on certain modules.... I don't think V (The one I use most) requires it....

Nevertheless - This seems like Corel all over. Don't listen to their users, take good programs and destroy them!!!! I only hope that they don't get so stupid with Painter!!!!

AnnaKirsten In reply to Zooreka [2008-06-11 19:42:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually pretty cross with Corel for having behaved this way with KPT! They did it with WordPerfect back in the old days when that was the main word-processing program being used in organisations here in England; completely changed its functions so that nothing that had been produced in an earlier version was compatible and so forth. Then again, why take just 9 of the original KPT effects, put them together in an incompatible program and make it available for MAC photoshop users, when in fact their market is mainly directed towards their own products, including PSP! Right now I hate them! When they took over PSP they went downhill thereon-in, bringing out Painter as an extra program to do what Jasc PSP was pretty capable of doing in their final production of Creative Suite which included PSP8! Now PSP is mundane!

But... I can't get to grips with Painter (which I have installed on my XP computer), so I'm blowed if I'll buy a later version of that. Neither can I afford Photoshop, nor do I want to have to learn all over again how to use such a program.

I guess I'm getting "past it"!

Oh that's really bad news about not being able to save presets too! But of course that goes with not being able to KPT to retain registration number. You know, I so nearly bought the version they have currently on sale (despite the question as to why should I buy it all over again), however having talked with their staff in the UK office, it turns out there's no way I could have had any further benefit from it.

Sorry for the rant...

Zooreka In reply to AnnaKirsten [2008-06-11 20:12:44 +0000 UTC]

Actually I don't think painter was ever even close to Painter in terms of what painter can do but I totally agree with you ... Corel destroyed PSP.... JASC's creator had sworn blind he'd never sell (but I hear that all the time)..... Painter though was already a Corel Program (Procreate it seems was actually an R&D division of Corel from what I have read)

Kai - which was once marketed by Kagi Soft got acquired by Procreate and one or two others before it became a main player in the Corel Stable. I think you might be referring to the Suite for Mac.... It was really promising but only works on the Non intel machines or in PSCS2 on the Intel running Tiger

However you look at it that seems to be business sense these days.... make the products even worse than ever..... New is definitely not good! Follow Micro$ofts example!!!! Steal what you can and stay lazy as long as you can....

Rant totally acceped..... hope you don't mind my rantful retort!!!

If you have a tablet I am sure I can give you a load of great tips for getting up and running with Painter....

It's much easier now than when I started with it and there are way more resources available...

Check out [link] for one - follow the links to his Gnomon tutorial series and you will find an excellent basics Video tutorial....

Jeremy Sutton also has a few (very expensive videos) but also avery affordable book with great resources available (wish I could get my hands on it here - there are a few brushes I really want to try out)

also There is a painter site and forum (part of the IP network of high strret publications in the UK - youll find the mag in W.H.Smiths or similar: [link]

That's just a few for starters....

AnnaKirsten In reply to Zooreka [2008-06-13 21:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for these links (I have them bookmarked for some future time when I just might get Painter X or whatever it becomes then. I do know that if I understood how to use the program I could achieve so much more of what's really within me. For some reason I drew a complete blank with the program when I did try it, and I wasn't happy to do Lynda.com stuff, as the last thing I wanted to do was clone a photo! Arrrgh! Btw, I think one of the problems might be that I am so used to using PSP and my understanding is that Painter is far more like CS to use.

Sorry if I'm negative just now, but I actually can't afford to purchase anything else yet in any case. These are all quite difficult decisions for me to make because I do get torn between so many different directions to go in.. Photography, traditional art, fractals, digital mixed media (which flippin' well involves KPT to boot!!!!) plus handling an impossible illness that requires me to do minimal physical stuff, and take frequent rests in order to survive it all.

Of course I don't mind your rantful response (I can give as good as I get ) but I still can't get over the loss of the full function of the KPT collection and Corel's dreadful lack of concern to keep it going and up to date!

Pinter is the most intimidating graphics app on the market..... It is simply awesome....

You might also look at this: [link] mind you there are one or two of the Lynda tutorials in there.... I agree with you... one of Lynda's worst offerings and teaches rather little than perhaps how to clone..... I was not impressed at all.

The previous links I gave you are worth their weight in diamonds!!!!

As for the res... I need to stop laughing to address some of your comments

Thank you so much. At least one bit of good news is that Flaming pear's latest versions are all Vista compatible, so all I had to do was download the newest versions of the packages I'd bought before, enter the same reg. numbers as before, and hey presto, all working! I love these plug-in filters very much indeed, but the KPT collection by Corel (I never managed to get hold of the original Metacreation sets) is a complete let-down, 'though I can use it with difficulty. I have relied on KPT quite heavily in the past in my MM pictures.
