1) Soft looking = don't pick pure black as the color, pick a grey brownish color
2) Varies in size = effect of warping
3) Photoshop: Raterize text layer --> select the selection tool (dotted square tool) --> right click on Raterized text layer --> select free transform --> right click again and select warp
