Description Introducing the Chief Tactical Officer of the USS Nathan James.

Born in 2337 in the S'Lara region on Vulcan, T'Mel was the daughter of the renowned Ambassador Muroc and Director T'Ara,  head of the Vulcan Science Academy.  She had an older brother, Kuvak, who had just entered Starfleet Academy.  Whilst aged eight, T'Mel's parents arranged for her future wedding to Lovar, the heir to an ancient family line with links to Surak.

In 2355, T'Mel decided to follow in her brother's footsteps and join Starfleet.  Some saw her decision as being driven by emotion, but her parents backed her choice and she entered Starfleet Academy in 2356.  Having never been off world before, she found Earth's climate to be "chilly", and she initially struggled with being surrounded by so many emotionally driven beings.  She quickly adapted though, and even made friends with several fellow cadets.  Following her graduation in 2359, T'Mel was posted aboard the USS Constitution NCC-1700-B as a junior tactical officer, a role in which she excelled.

By 2364 T'Mel was the Constitution's Delta Shift Tactical Officer, and had been recently promoted to full Lieutenant.  Despite her cool and logical demeanor, she had "loosened up", and now sported ear piercings.  She had also recently become romantically involved with a scientist stationed aboard, Dr Simon Yates.  When her parents sent for her so that she could marry Lovar, she refused, an act that brought shame to her parents.  She and her father became estranged, though she remained in contact with her mother.

By 2366 T'Mel and Yates's relationship had grown closer, and he proposed later that year.  They were married the following year in a shipboard ceremony that honoured both human and Vulcan customs.  In 2368 T'Mel gave birth to a daughter, who was named Lynna.  In 2369 T'Mel was reassigned to the newly launched Galaxy-class USS Venture, and Yates and Lynna went with her.  Yates became the ships chief xenobiologist.

When the Dominion War began in 2373, Yates and Lynna were transferred off the Venture along with the majority of the ships civilian compliment.  They moved to Earth to be out of harms way, staying with Yates's parents.

In 2374, the year she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, her brother was killed when his ship, the USS Soval, was destroyed.  Following the wars cessation, she travelled to Vulcan with her husband and six year old daughter to attend the memorial service with her parents.  Whilst there T'Mel was reconciled with her father.  Two days before leaving, T'Mel witnessed her mother crying, and discovered that she had been diagnosed with Bendii Sysndrome.

In 2281 the Borg launched an all out invasion of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, and T'Mel nearly lost her life when the Venture was crippled defending Starbase 554.  Fortunately her husband and daughter were on Vulcan, and she was reunited with them following the removal of the Borg by the Caeliar.  It was at this time that T'Mel briefly considered leaving Starfleet, but her husband and daughter convinced her to stay.

In 2382, having just been promoted to Commander, T'Mel accepted Captain Thomas Chandler's offer to join his crew, and became the Chief Tactical Officer of the USS Nathan James NCC-80151, which was launched in 2383.

I don't quite understand Vulcan's insistance on 'arranged marriages.' Which is what it essentially is.

I think it stems from ancient traditions from the time before Surak.
