Having undergone a massive refit, the USS Valley Forge NCC-43305 approaches the edge of known space. Under the command of Captain Daniel Jameson, the ship and her crew are about to embark on a seven year mission of exploration beyond the borders of Federation space.

Starfleet Command is trying out longer missions of exploration into the unknown, as their ships are self sustaining mobile communities. This in turn will lead to bigger, longer missions into the unknown (such as the Andromeda Fleet).
Plus it fits in with the Valley Forge RPG I'm co-running with my girlfriend. The adventures are "episodes", and each one falls into a season 1, season 2 and so on. Seven years equals seven seasons. There will be story arcs, and events in one adventure can, and will, affect later ones.
