They lived in bodies of water. The legends differ in some cases as to its appearances and locations C:

Ooh, a white Kelpie! And a rather healthy looking one at that! What a nice change from the more popular black or green things usually seen c:

Searching through DA, though, I've mainly seen black and green, but I think white makes it far more spooky and ominous c:

I'm in love with the colors in this.
The messy strands of hair and foamy water are really nice details. :]

Really? o_O I've heard of them reputedly being spirits of the dead, or more, lording over the spirits of the dead but I didn't know they had an ounce of protective instinct in them.

lol...I've read that one, too. They are all sweet until the wife misses her family.
I started doing research for a project a friend and I are doing, retelling myths and legends, I bought a book on Scottish folklore and then one on Celtic folklore and Irish tales...the difference is quite shocking. But Yeats wrote my favorite book so far.
W.B. Yeats wrote, "If we could love and hate with as good a heart as the faeries do, we might grow to be long-lived like them. But until that day their untiring joys and sorrows must ever be one-half of their fascination." -The Celtic Twilight.
He insists the negative view is due to Catholocism wanting to draw the people away from pagan beliefs by making anything outside of it 'demonic' or evil. So you get horror stories instead of fantastical frolicks.

I love Yeats and pretty much dote on his poem/song 'the stolen child'. I shall have to read The Celtic Twilight. It makes so much sense, after all, hatred and love are simply two sides of the same coin.
Yes, I find they do this a lot to the fey... but I don't believe it is all untrue. Fey aren't bad or good, they're like us humans (if you choose to believe) and they have their faults. There are plenty of short tempered men, why not a short tempered kelpie. Plus I do believe the kelpie and each usige are the sort of creatures that are meant to be story book evil, even if they do have a loving side. Sort of like a wolf.
I hope your project goes well. I wish we did projects like that but were I live there seems to be a deliberate attempt to move us away from the past, especially the long gone past.

Spectacular! It is always nice to see artwork of such a fascinating entity. I think this really captures the utter creepiness of the Kelpie, without going into the depths of, eh, un-realistic-ness. xD And the simplicity (as in speed-paint) doesn't seem to detract from the detail very much at all. But in any case, I think this is a perfect representation of the species, with both horse-like features and foreboding signs of its inner desire to kill. The mane is likely my favorite part here, as it definitely looks wet and matted (yet still lifelike) , as if this Kelpie had just returned from the depths after devouring its last item of prey. The atmosphere of the picture is another really positive aspect, and the colour choices match very well with the mood of the scene. The pose is perhaps one of the more frightening poses that such a creature could make, almost as if saying "you're next" to the viewer. oO Overall, a nearly flawless piece, and definitely a work to be proud of.
