IMPORTANT: READ FROM RIGHT TO LEFT!Sort-of spoilers for the plotline for the book The Giver by Lois Lowry. I read this today and was inspired to do fanart. Instead, I ended up with a doujinshi-esque thing regarding the scene near the middle of the book, when the other Twelves play a game of bad guys/good guys, which Jonas recognizes as a game of war.
I took the liberty of changing the dialogue and sequence of events to fit a more dramatic format.
There's no shading and no screentoning because I suck at this. I'm afraid my drawings will smear if I try to shade, and I have no screentones to use, not even digital ones. Sooo... yeah.

I just read this book in my Children's Literature college class and let me just say that this is, by far, one of the most insightful, disturbing, and life-changing books that I have ever read. I remember back in elementary school that my fellow classmates were all reading it. I was curious about it at the time but never picked it up until recently. I don't believe there is one simple straightforward meaning to this book. It's incredibly complex (for a kids' story) and has various interpretations. I do know that one of the major themes in it is decisions.
The Community demonstrates what total equality would possibly look like: Lack of emotion, free will, and diversity. I believe that, while we all deserve equal rights, differences should not be ignored or frowned upon. I think it's just as vital to accept someone's differences asΒ it is to find what you have in common with him or her.Β

I read it in 8th grade... am now midway through my Bachelors degree and I just finished it once more... All I gotta say is this is perfect. Exactly how I pictured it. Love the fact that it's in black and white... colourless, we all know why.

I JUST read this scene in the Giver!! The book is AMAZING!! I LOVE IT!! After reading the memories Jonas experienced and everything everybody else in the book (besides the Giver) look and act like foolish, blind children.
Can't wait to see what Jonas is gonna do about it.

theyre not really a series, more like separate stories with subtle (or unsubtle) hints connecting them together, well the fourth book came out, and my friends still has it out but its about Gabriel's Mom

well it doesnt really say what happened to him until the third book because each book has a different character telling their story, i was kinda confused when they mentioned Jonas (they didnt say his name) since when i read the giver, i kinda skimmed the part at the end with the red sled but wwere reading the giver in my class and i finally read that part again then it all made sense...i just realized you probably have no idea what im talking about
anyways, the only book you really need to read to find out what happened to them is the third book (Messenger) and if you want to know the story of Gabriel's mom then the fourth book (Son)

Haha I would have probably done that too, and I think Jonas became the leader of this community and Gabe found his mom after this witch turned her into an old lady....and Gabe defeated it so the mom was young again, and Jonas and the girl from gathering blue get married and they all live happily ever after.
