Curiously, at the end of the 3rd season premiere, it was implied that Luna will now train Twiligth.

Well, a Luna centric episode is expected for season 2, sadly the return of the Great and Powerful Trixie is still on doubt.

I know it makes me sad we may not see Trix again till season 3. But yeah, I think both of these chars are pretty interesting and have room for great storytelling and development, I would hope both get better parts in the series as it progresses. And yeah the MLP team really needs to consider making Trix Luna's apprintance, that would just be so fun.
But then again it'll probably just reamin one of my many fanboyish dreams i've had over the years....why do so many series squander the potential of secondary & lesser characters.... there so much fun. But meh MLP just started last year, so who knows, maybe both Luna & Trix will get bigger parts in future seasons. *crosses fingers*

Well, Luna needs an apprentice, there is no doubt she is a powerful magic user, after all she could challenge Celestia, she is just younger, maybe the mentoring could help her to mature.
Also could help Trix, the apprenticeship should help to humble her a little, and who knows, maybe even make a true friend.

Also both are blue, underused, were the antagonist in their respective episodes and have a rather tragic story; they can surely relate to each other.

Actually, they were both protagonists in their episodes. The protagonist is a character who sets a plan in motion (usually the villain); the antagonist (usually the hero) is the one who tries to stop them. People get that mixed up all the time.

Indeed; both are very powerful unicorni(sp?), but diametrally opposed, being Trixie a showoff and all smug while Twilight rather humble and definitively friendlier albeit socially awkward.
