Description Name: NA-006 "Skana" (Haida for 'killer whale')
Species: Orcinus orca
Subspecies: Type 1 Eastern North Atlantic (Icelandic)
Gender: Male
DOB: January 1998
Parents: NA-001 Imalu, NA-010 Apollo (suspected)
Offspring: None

Appearance:
21 ft long, 7,800 lbs. Hazel-brown eyes. Dorsal fin collapsed to the left side. Freckling on jaw, chest, tail flukes, and in eyepatches. Front teeth on upper jaw are worn, teeth on lower jaw are in fair condition. Flukes do not curl.  Skana is considered to be underweight and not in very good muscle tone, likely due to inadequate room for exercise combined with a lazy personality.
*Cartoon Skana has larger freckles. Realism Skana has smaller freckles.

Personality:
Above all, Skana is strong willed, ornery, and stubborn. Lonely and lazy are also commonly used adjectives when describing him.
He is uncooperative at best. Even as a youngster, he resisted training and when he did obey signals, it is with as little effort as possible while still accomplishing the task. He remains emotionally distanced from caretakers and doesn't seem fond of any of them, despite their best efforts - he prefers to eat fish tossed into the water rather than into his mouth, and he rejects tactile from trainers. Despite his bitter feelings towards humans, its very clear that he craves companionship of some sort, and he sometimes seems to feel conflicted about whether he should reach out to trainers, or continue to hold them at a distance. This manifests itself in him swimming along the pool's edge - out of reach, but following a trainer or park guest and watching them intently. He is not above lashing out at anything that pushes him too far, human or otherwise, but he has never made any real contact. His usual tactic is angrily splashing humans instead of getting directly violent. The staff at the aquarium he was sold to are fairly inexperienced in dealing with cetaceans, which Skana takes full advantage of - he knows how to push people to get his way, or at the very least, not give them their's.
Skana is most often seen swimming laps around his pool very close to the bottom. As the tank is only a tad deeper than he is long, that isn't saying much. He has been known to hunt a bird or two during his ample spare time, but this is extremely rare and he doesn't seem to know what to do with one once he procures it. His interest in enrichment toys is fleeting; he grows bored with them rather quickly and will only make use of any given toy for a short amount of time before he begins to ignore it and continues his laps around the bottom of the pool. Skana is not often seen at the surface other than to breathe, although he does spyhop to keep an eye on the humans around his pool, and he is known to log at the surface on rainy days, perhaps enjoying the raindrops on his skin. Extremely rare are temper tantrums where he thrashes near the surface, and depressed periods where he lays on the bottom of the tank, however they do occur.

History:
Skana was captured in Iceland at a very young age and was immediately sold to an aquarium in Canada to replace their deceased breeding male Duke, where Skana remained for thirteen years, until it was decided that he was not desirable, between refusing to perform and not behaving favorably towards his tankmates - namely, not breeding with the females. He was also not compatible with his female tankmates at Seas of Life Aquarium, being routinely displaced and bullied by the females, who had been known to have aggressive tenancies in the past where they frequently attacked the aquarium's former breeding male. After a failure to obtain another wild-caught male orca (Ironically, Skana's brother Ano) it was decided to sell Skana to raise the funds to buy a more acceptable breeding male. He was sold to a newly opened aquarium (Aquatic Kingdom) in Washington in 2012 as its sole cetacean, although the facility houses many species of seals and sea lions, penguins, sharks, turtles, and fish. The aquarium hadn't intended to display cetaceans, but took the opportunity that was presented to them. As such, Skana's tank is poorly designed for an animal of his size and power. There has been talk of obtaining bottlenose or white sided dolphins as companions for him, but thus far, it has been only talk.

Transfers:
1999: Ocean (Iceland) to Seas of Life (Quebec, Canada)
2012: Seas of Life (Quebec, Canada) to Aquatic Kingdom (Seattle, Washington)

Tankmates:
Rain [1999-2012], Pom [1999-2012], Breeze [1999-2012], Ruckus [2000-2002] [Deceased]
No current tankmates

Other:
Skana was born to Imalu (a large surprise to researchers, given her age at the time of his birth), making him the brother of Ano, Kaiko, Nai'a, and Alohi. It is suspected that, like Ano, he may have been fathered by Apollo - this would make him his full brother, however the half brother of Kaiko, Alohi, and Nai'a.

Skana may be drawn with Ano from time to time, but such paintings are not canon.

Ahh! So lovely to see this boy again! And I'm sure he will fit in nicely with the rest of NA Pod
I really look forward to seeing more of him!

I need to draw him with Ano!

Thank you! I am quite excited to have developed him in this way - he is without a doubt one of my favorite OCs and this backstory for him finally feels 'right'. I'd tossed around the idea of Ano having a younger brother for awhile, now. With Imalu's age, though, I wasn't sure that it would be realistic. However, one of the recent J-Pod births proved that it is possible, even if unlikely, for an older female to have a successful pregnancy.

I would greatly appreciate that! But, as always, feel no pressure or obligation.

I know he's gone through several different back stories, so I'm happy you've managed to find one you're really happy with
I think the new additions to J-Pod have also brought me back into my orca characters, so its nice that they are having affect on people (:

it may not be done for some time, but it is definitely something I want to do, kinda an updated version of the last piece i did of him (:

I am as well! I sometimes wonder if people get bothered by the fact that I often change the backstories of some of my OCs, but I wont know what I feel works for them unless I give it a test spin, right?

The new J-Pod babies are certainly something to celebrate!

That would be very neat to see! He was formerly much younger.

i sure don't but then I can't speak for anyone else, but they are your characters after all, if you wanna change their story then why not (:
'You don't know unless you try' is one of my favourite quotes

Definitely! I'd love to be able to go and see the SRs at some point in the near-ish future (:

Its reassuring to hear that. Thank you!

One of my biggest wishes for myself is that I will be able to view wild orcas. Unfortunately, I would have to go across the country, which isn't possible due to budget and responsibilities at home. Maybe someday.
