Description Ritornerò
Da te tornerò
Sarò sempre nel vento che va
Respirerò
Per l'eternità
Con te per sempre io vivrò

Come back,
I will return to you.
I am always in the vent that
Comes and goes
For all eternity.
With you... I will always live.

- Madre Terra, Globus

It's finally done, after getting sidetracked for n times. I chose to go with the cave suggestion for a background, although I also decided to evoke a sense of water that wasn't there (to emphasize the contrasts). The rocks were rendered using a mix of photomanipulation and actual digital painting. Most of the images I used were photos taken by my dad during an outing, but I relied on a googled reference of the Antelope Canyon to come up with the soft-looking formations at the very back.

Although this started off as fanart, I've already incorporated too many original elements into the characters such that they've become quite unrecognizable (to those who are unfamiliar with my gijinka renditions, that is). Hence, I submitted it under a different category. A great many thanks to all those who gave helpful tips and feedback for improvement. Since this was my first artwork that somewhat crosses the line between anime and realism, I had to do a lot of experimentation and trial-and-error.

Do not use or distribute this artwork without my permission.

Someone already corrected ya, but yeah, that character isn't Dialga. He's a Salamence character I intentionally made to resemble him for some plot purposes.

It isn't Dialga, it's a Salamence gijinka.

Frick.

Well then. XD

I can't tell them apart yet D: I think it's because I haven't read her fanfic... but I keep thinking it's Dialga because I'm pretty sure that's Palkia... right? D:

Yus, it's Palkia and Antarel's newest character. You should REALLY read her fanfic, it's really awesome.
Now let's not clog her comments section with our convo.

I had a feeling that the cave background would work best and with the least effort Everything looks so amazingly detailed. I still don't know how you do it, even after watching you for so long, but each finished piece of your's always seems to somehow bring everything "to the next level of amazement"

Yeah, your suggestion helped a LOT. I've done starry backgrounds plenty of times and even though this one also features Palkia, I am not really keen on repeating that same thing all over again. O_o Hee... I don't really know how I do it myself. Maybe this is what they call "passion"? ^_^;

Yeah...your backgrounds are great but it is good to prevent from becoming a "one-trick pony". Yeah, if it is passion, you definitely have it...a lot of it

Everybody's said what I always say about your works, so it bears no repeating. Though... yeah. It /has/ to be just me. x_x; The rocks are rendered extremely well and this is a very nice transition from anime to a more realistic look.

Gah, sorry for late replies. My family and I went on an outing for three days and I haven't taken a look at my account til now. x_x

Computer curvature (if yours has) does funny things to the eyes, but I'm pretty sure the thing looks okay from a flat-screen version. Besides, if I removed Kousei and rotated Kiya's face about -17 degrees, the illusion vanishes 99%. @_@ I'm glad you think the rocks look fine, since you know precisely why I'm doing this transition from anime to semi-realism. *coughs*

Although strangely, what I'm /really/ happy about is that someone else mistook Kouseikei for Dia. This just means my work had already served one of its purposes. XD

's okay, I hope you guys had a lot of fun on your outing.

Sadly, I do have a flat screen monitor, so maybe it's just /me/. @_@; The illusion is always going to bug me, unfortunately, since that's how it always is when something jumps out at me that doesn't seem to look right, but I assure you that I love the artwork aside from that and Kiya's as beautiful as ever. No problem, and the splashes of water in the background are a /very/ nice touch, too. Watch out for Zubats, guys! Yup, and my lips are zipped, dun worry.

I admit that comment made me go @_@ at first when I read it, but then I remembered what we talked about and went "Oh, yeah, duh!" ^_^; Oh yeah, before I forget: have you seen the version mascots for Black and White yet?

Antarel In reply to chaosisd [2010-05-30 22:04:28 +0000 UTC]

So far even the ones who noticed that buggy illusion before aren't making a thing of it, so yeah, I presume ya just have to deal with it (Gomen ne!). ^_^; Surprise, those aren't water splashes! Those are rocks that attained that pattern due to heavy water weathering. And hmmm, Salamence's Intimidate acts like some sort of Repel on the field, so I presume they don't have to worry about Zubats any time soon. XD

Yup, I have seen the version mascots for Black and White. Although there are some elements in their design that look too Palkia-ish to me, I like them A LOT BETTER than the starters (and is it just me or does it seem that they're more mecha-ish than the previous version mascots?). At least it gives me some hope that they'll finally be giving the poor girl a decent right-hand of sorts.

Oh gah, I don't mean to make a thing of it, sorry, sorry! x_x; Huh, that's ingenius (I think that's the right word, anyway)! Yeah, you're right about that, I forgot Salamence has Intimidate, and I like the idea of it working like Repel does.

Yeah, they look mecha-ish to me, too, the tails especially, but I still like them despite that. Makes me wonder what they'll do for the third version later on. I prefer Reshiram over Zekrom, but the latter is growing on me. I want to draw Reshiram as a gijinka one of these days, but he keeps coming out to look like Sephiroth whenever I try to sketch up an design idea in my mind. >_<

Antarel In reply to chaosisd [2010-05-31 01:11:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't really think it's ingenious for me, per se. Plenty of formations like that exist in real life; I was just impressed so much that I decided to integrate them into the artwork. I've raised enough Salamence and Gyarados to know from experience that Intimidate lowers the encounter rate of wild 'mon, so yeah, it's like a built-in Repel.

The fact that they have RAM and ROM in their names didn't miss the Computer Science major in me. Are the producers deciding to go tekkie/mecha here? ^_^; I like them equally with regards to body design, but I am also partial to Reshiram when it comes to the face (besides, the guy looks more organic than its counterpart). Good luck if you ever get to doing that. As I've told you before, there is a great chance that I will no longer draw any gijinkas aside from those who will feature in our stories. Even if I do give the new generation a try, I doubt they'll have the same soul I've given to the Dragon Trio.

I do, I like the way you made it look like there's still actually water there. Wow, that is awesome, I never knew it worked like that in the games. o_o *is slow*

And now I notice that after you point it out, feh, I hate how damn slow I am sometimes. x_x I dunno, seems like it, though, since I read somewhere that Isshu is more technologically advanced than the other four regions are. Reshiram's face looks wolf-like to me, which is a bonus and yeah, I agree with what you said about him looking more organic than his counterpart. Thank you, I'll need it, but Articuno's up next in regards to Legend gijinkas, and I hope I'll be able to do her the justice she deserves. It's all right if you never draw new gijinkas again, though I'll miss seeing your take on 'em, and I understand what you're saying since the Dragon Trio mean so much to us.

Aha, a cave. That's a perfect background. It really does contribute to the overall mood of this piece. I love how you made the rocks glow, it makes it look so serene. And I think you did a perfect job with the realism, their faces look flawless. Palkia's eyes have a piercing look, or maybe it's just me. She is just so adorable, I just wanna go hug her!! >< Wait, I've probably said that about every one of your gijinkas. Anyhoo, Kousei's robe is just awesome, it seems to fit well with the design of Salamence. I like his shiny headdress thingy, whatever you call it. The colors you used go so beautifully together, and the way you darkened it down makes the rocks around them look so more alive. It really does work with the title of the piece. Awesome job, Antarel.

Even if I already commented the non-background one, I have to at least say, that you chose the right background for the picture...It really fits ^^
