Description I felt alone and it was almost night
so I sat down to paint

Squirted gobs onto the palette
from colored tubes

and pushed a brush through them
First I wanted to make a portrait

of a girl I had seen in a dream
and loved

but I forgot her face
Then I thought I might

paint the box of flowers
at my window

but my neighbor had cut them
to keep for herself

I settled on the view outside
through the mesh of the screen

hazy with the dusk
just setting in

I swept through my shades of blue
with the smell of the rain that was on its way

My green and umber hues
disappeared into the groans of the trees as the wind picked up

All my oranges and yellows
flitted into place for the petals my neighbor had left behind

Before I knew it
I started weeping

I didn’t mean to
The world jiggled pale and watery

and bright
somewhere between joy and misery

I wasn’t torn or mended
or anything at all

I was just
out of paint

at the exact moment
I was done painting

and the rain that had been promised
all day

finally
came down
