Description I drew this at the request of . This is Obsidian, a demon cat with telekinetic powers. She will be the central character in an ongoing series showing how she came to be the voluptuous belly dancer he has envisioned her as today. This is what she will look like at the beginning of the story. I agreed to take this on as a true test of both my skills as both an artist and storyteller.

Age: 20
Height: 5' 10''
Weight: 135 pounds

Look forward to seeing the rest of Obsidian's friends in the future.

Appreciate it.

I'm very pleased to know you feel that way. Anatomy is something which I'm always looking to improve upon.

Again, thank you. I do all of my drawings traditionally, including the colors and shading.

I've never attempted a digital overlay before, and would have to do some research. While digital coloring may give me more options, I take great satisfaction in coloring with actual pencils. When coloring digitally, you can afford to make mistakes. They're easily fixable. Traditional coloring, however, requires more precision. If you screw something up, you just need to roll with it. For the record, every time I scan in a new drawing, I digitally clean it up; adjusting the shading, removing unwanted specs from the page, and making it more presentable overall.

I actually do trace over the outlines of my work in pen, but I don't use it for either coloring or shading. I usually don't like painting either as it can get very messy, it takes a lot of set up and cleanup, and (as you stated) it's very easy to make mistakes.

I might do a little research on the tablet. That actually sounds more workable for me.

Much appreciated all around!

Btw, in case you didn't read the description, Obsidian is not my OC. She will not appear in my novels. I drew her as part of a long term side project I'm planning out. Obsidian belongs to a guy who goes by blackgeno. She is the titular character in an ongoing comic series I've agreed to draw and write for him. We've been having discussions on it for a few months now. I still need to design the rest of the characters, and we're hammering out the details for the main narrative. I'm hoping to see it begin coming to fruition in the coming months.

Indeed, no problem.

Thanks, I'd say just keep practicing on any parts you looking to improve on (by making more art of course) and find an artist who you can learn from and emulate a bit in a few areas.

No problem, I'll admit that traditional definitely takes a lot of still; I always just kinda figured that it has some difficult limitations.

What you say is true, but that's also the strongest point of digital: that it allows you to keep adapting and perfecting your submission until it's right where you want it. I suppose you could consider it less challenging, but really use whatever fits your goals for the art.

Hmm, well that's the only way I can think that you can take traditional further... I suppose that if your happy with the art and your fans are happy than just keep perfecting; but if either group wants more that would be the way to take it further traditional wise.

Of course, I hope the feedback was helpful.

Oh ok sorry, I see a lot of these submissions and I don't always closely read the descriptions (my bad). Cool, good luck on creating the rest of your cast and bios, reminds me a lot of my current project.

Thanks!

That's my plan! I often do look at other pics for references, either for poses, or making sure I'm getting the details right with the species when designing a new character. I'll sometimes take inspiration from other people's work as well.

True, though I'm sure digital takes a certain degree of skill, too. It's give and take with the limitations.

I agree, but I do believe I would need to hone my skills at digital art in order to achieve a satisfying end result.

I am happy with my work. When I look back at what my drawings looked like a few years ago, they don't hold a candle to my work today. Without tooting my own horn too much, I do feel that there's been a vast improvement in my skills, and my fans really seem to be enjoying it. Only one time have I ever met a person who straight up said they disliked my work. She was a girl I met in person, and honestly, she was a complete snob. Yes, she went to an art school, and produced lovely work, but that didn't give her the right to talk down to me in the way she did. She was condescending, stuck-up, rude, and obnoxious. Half the time she didn't even seem to be listening to what I was saying, and she had no concept of constructive criticism. It was like talking to an incredibly callous robot, but I digress.

It was.

S'all good. I know there's a lot to go through. Thank you! ^_^

You're welcome!

Indeed, that's the best course of action for any artist looking to improve really.

I'd say digital takes a few different skills yes, but with drawing pads you'd be surprised how much overlap there is.

Indeed, again there can be a lot of overlap with drawing tablets.

I definitely think my work has improved over time as well, though typically it's really subtle things that are harder for fans to notice honestly. I don't think I've received any outright negative feedback yet, but I did have one viewer that was kinda "needy" and when he lost one of my contests (via random pick) he got all mad and said he was never watching my page again before blocking my response. So yeah, it happens.

Glad to hear it.

Cool, glad you understand.

Indeed, talk to you again another time perhaps.

Agreed.

I may do some research on drawing pads, and see how much they go for.

People like that are just immature and better left ignored.

Peace!

Indeed.

Well just make sure to cross reference before buying, you don't want to end up with a bad one. That said there are plenty of affordable ones that do a good job so I hear.

Yeah, thankfully it's really rare that I encounter them.

Yep, Peace out.

human72 In reply to AnthroLoverJay [2015-02-04 01:22:22 +0000 UTC]

indeed though what kind of plot will it be I have a idea that it could be due to steph's background and family that in her younger years that her families buseness got struck by a enbelser that nearly ruined the company and that criminal was a cat is why she hates cats.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnthroLoverJay In reply to human72 [2015-02-04 02:09:37 +0000 UTC]

Between you and me, I can tell you that her bias toward cats is indeed based on an incident (or possibly a series of incidents) from her past. The thing of it is, I don't want to spoil a revelation from the book.

human72 In reply to AnthroLoverJay [2015-02-04 02:46:20 +0000 UTC]

ah ok then though what I said could be one of those incidents in her life? or do you have that all set up then?

AnthroLoverJay In reply to blackgeno [2015-02-03 01:00:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Hm, kind of hard to change the smile as I drew this traditionally. It should also be noted that I gave her those pointed fang like teeth. Just an extra detail to play up the demon bit.
