SVTFOE fanfic thing I wrote late last night. It’s just something random so don’t expect anything spectacular. The narrator is someone who goes to school with Marko but works for Ludo. And btw the monsters are basically the human! versions of themselves. enjoy.

Each second I sit in paranoia- wondering if we were going to get caught- if our cover was going to get blown.

I was convinced every stare was an accusation, every conversation the word that exposed us. Buff-Frog and the more intelligent ones reflected my unease, but Ludo himself had declared war on his fingernails and was angrily chewing them off.

I had planned our little “outing” at the same time of Memphis’s comic-con, even made fake passes for us to wear and replaced armor with paper-mache and stuck liquid latex on scales and webbing to make it look like costume make-up. And being in Memphis was great as well, there was no chance anyone here would know me.

We were here to go to

McDonalds.

Note to self: Never. Ever. Bring mcnuggets to work ever again.

And after that it wasn’t enough to just bring them some. No, the second I described the human experience of ordering fast food they all became fascinated with the concept and insisted on trying it for themselves. Which I of course refused, but Ludo threatened to bring a war-band to Earth and do it himself and I thought I could reduce collateral damage if I over-seed the little field-trip.

I lifted both feet back and forth on the sticky floor nervously and wiped my sweaty palms off on my hoodie, the line seemingly never moving. The monsters were talking amongst themselves, trying to be normal when they had no idea how. Mostly everyone had gotten used to them now- excepting children which mostly still stared.

“Ludo, oh my God, quit, that’s unsanitary.”

“What does that mean?” He paused with his eyes narrowed.

I groaned “Never mind.”

“Um, how do you . . . uh . . . tell them what you want to eat again?” Buff-Frog leaned back and looked at me, raising an eyebrow. Several others, hearing his question, paused and looked at me, waiting for an answer.

I sighed, having gone over this a million times “Look at the pictures, find the one you want, and say the number beside it. For those of you that can’t read-” I glared at Ludo who promptly glared back
“just pretend to not speak English and point at the one you want, the employees here don’t know the difference anyway.”

They nodded and went back to whispering to each other again. We looked like a cult with really good special effects skills. “And, hey, guys- just point at me if they ask you any questions.”

I began to run my hands through my hair like a maniac, all my nervous energy having nowhere to escape. I only noticed the shadow of the person close to me when they had come reasonably far into my personal bubble and I almost knocked him over when I spun around.

“Elbow room.” I hissed scanning the people around us as I waited for someone to start screaming ‘monsters’ and cause mass chaos.

“Well I was going to give you this other coffee but if you’re going to be hateful . . . “ he trailed off smoothly.

I snatched it out of his hands and drunk it quickly, not caring that it burned me for it occupied my hands and mind for a few seconds. “Thank you- wait- where did you get this!? We’ve been waiting in line for like half an hour.”

“Drive-through.” He said plainly, eyes not leaving our crowd.

“You can drive, Toffee?”

“Not legally.”

“You have a car?”

“No but you do.” He said, holding up my car keys.

“What the?” I patted my pockets stupidly before grabbing my keys from his hands.

“I also took 5$ of the money you had that Ludo stole from-

“Shut up- I’d rather live without the knowledge of where they got it.”

“Probably.” He murmured into his cup as he took a thoughtful sip.

“Why are you missing a finger?” A little girl asked beside him as she reached for his hand.

He quickly stuck his hand between the buttons of his suit, only regarding her with his eyes once. With the look he gave her I was sure he was going to slap her or something “I had an accident.” He growled, eyes unfocused as he looked forward.

I wanted to tell Ludo to stop eating pure ketchup behind me but I dare not stop listening to this.

“Who are you supposed to be?” She looked him up and down with her nose crumpled “The Lizard? You know he’s supposed to wear a lab coat, not a suit? And he doesn’t have hair like yours. And he’s missing a whole hand not a finger-

“Yes I’m the Lizard. I’m just a different Lizard.”

He still didn’t look at her.

“You’re weird.” She said, her nose and face wrinkling further “And mean.” She spat.

“And you’re a little brat!” he snapped, whirling on her as scales flared all over his face and his head began to become slightly more lizard-ey. I don’t know if I or she flinched more, I having never heard him raise his voice before.

Toffee was already long-gone out the door before her face soured out of shock and she took off bawling out the other exit.

The whole restaurant really was looking at me now, I having been the only one talking to him.

The group of monsters stared at me for the longest time to, the cashiers aloofly taking orders still, and I waited for a long time for the girl’s mother to come in and scream at us, which never happened.

“Buff-Frog says you owe him $20 ‘cause you said I would be the first one to cause a scene.” Ludo came back to stand by me and lick ketchup off his hands. “Don’t worry I’m not mad because I would have bet on me causing a scene too. You’re like our weird monster mother you know that- we call you that all the time . . .” His words trailed off as I remained zoned out.

“That was weird.” I said quietly.

“That was scary as Hell.” He said matter-of-factly with a nod.

The rest of the process went relatively smoothly, I having to tell the woman working the register “to-go” a thousand times, and then paying her with the wad of $5 bills I wanted to remain ignorant about. Yes, relatively smoothly till a boy with acne problems and greasy hair came up and questioned our “cosplaying”, telling us how inaccurate all of it was till Ludo flipped him off and kicked him squarely in the nuts when the guy screamed a cuss word at him.

It was then I decided to move our little party out onto the covered dining area, which was slightly better, giving us a fresh batch of people to freak out. They didn’t however, pleasantly surprising me by eating in an only mildly barbaric way, and not causing any mass violence.

I was surprised when Toffee reappeared and sit by me, supporting his chin on his palm and covering his mouth with his fingers.

He didn’t speak and I dare not speak to him, his only notable motion pulling his tail under the table after the first man stepped on it.

“Oh, hey, what are you doing here?!” I heard a familiar voice call out with my name.

Jackie Thomas? What was she doing here?

She suddenly sit down beside me, smiling as she fully realized it was me. “What’s wrong?” She looked at my face and I realized how alarmed I was. “We’re lab partners in Bio, don’t you remember?”

“Yeah.” I said with a laugh that sounded way guiltier than I intended “So, uh, what brings you to Memphis?”

“Oh, family” she said, looking around, and then at the pass around my neck “Wait, you hang out with nerds and do stuff like this?”

“Who ya callin’ nerds!?” Ludo shrieked before Buff-Frog silenced him.

I scratched the back of my head, motioning in Ludo’s direction “Well, that’s my nephew and this is his little group. They play D and D online and meet up to do stuff like this. My sis likes me to keep up with him and since I’m closer to his age he accepts me a little bit more as a babysitter.”

Crap. That almost sounded like a lie I wrote down.

She smiled though “Aw, that’s sweet of you. So’s this your boyfriend?” She pointed at the stoic form of Toffee.

I blanched, turning pale as I made awkward sounds that weren’t even close to words.

She looked at me concernedly as she spoke “Oh, he family or something?”

“Boyfriend.” Toffee said plainly.

A blush lit my face like fire.

Jackie smiled and punched my arm “Why are you embarrassed?” She teased, then whispered in my ear “Lucky, he’s hot. I’d like to see him with that weird green make-up and scales off.”

She smiled at me as she jumped up from the table “See you in Bio!” She called as she ran towards a car where an older lady was waiting.

I waited for a few seconds with my face bright red, then whirled in mortification “Why would you say that!? There was a chance she wouldn’t mention this at school later where it’ll get back to Star now there’s no possibility she won’t! Because now-

I stopped, my words over rolling my logic.

“Because now what?” he said with a smirk “What makes a difference?”

“Because people gossip about relationships.”

“Nice try but that’s your lying face.”

“Because you really are really nice looking and that’s special and they’ll talk about it because of that!” I blurted out, then turned away again.

I stopped, realizing all the monsters were gone except Ludo and Buff-Frog, which I was upset at at first but I realized if they’d done it that subtly I supposed it was fine.

Ludo snapped his scissors impatiently “Coming?”

I realized with great relief he hadn’t been listening to us.

“We’ll come later.” Toffee said plainly as he looked at his watch.

“Fine. I wanna go to Walmart next week, by the way.” Then he simply cut a hole in space-time on the McDonald’s patio and was gone. And miraculously no one noticed it either.

He stood. “You haven’t eaten yet have you?” he said, extending a hand. “I’ll take you somewhere not full of preservatives and grease.” He flipped my car keys out of his pocket.

He grinned “Isn’t that what Earth boyfriends do?”
