I know right?! I have no idea why Chamber and Skin weren't knee deep in ladies all the time because they were lovely and committed and perfect! Ah well.

Nice work on Angelo. A lot of people didn't like Skin because they thought he was a stereotype because he was Latino and he used to run with a gang. But I think the gang thing was necessary for part of his character. Lobdell used to describe him as the guy who used to have to work twice as hard for things that other people took for granted. The way I interpreted that is that he's the guy who never got any breaks and always had the worst luck. He grew up dirt poor in the barrio of East LA and had to run with a gang to get by. He was an average student at best, not a natural athlete and on top of that ended up a mutant with a power that was not only weird but hit him with the ugly stick. All he had going for him was his weird power, a little bit of street smarts and lots of chutzpah and he made do with it.

Thanks! Yea I really liked Angelo and have high hopes for his return now that there are rumblings for a Gen X reunion. I don't like him with Jubes though. The chick from the gang seemed more his speed. Torres was it? She was cute. I wouldn't even make a big deal of his return either-- like I think I'd have him in LA this whole time with Torres, maybe even leading a gang. And I think I'd give him a real grudge against the X-Men. But of course get back with his teammates when duty calls. And he'd be in full control of his power-- able to use it a little like Mr. Fantastic and also control his facial appearance so he looks less melty.
Geez I didnt mean to ramble. 90's X-Men takes me there-- lol. Thanks for commenting!

Poor, poor Skin. Pulled out of limbo just to get killed off. *sigh* But I guess we've discussed the travesty that is Generation X plenty already.
I like how you handled the effect of his extra mass and am intrigued by the prospect of the "mature" verson. Aargh; I'm still too poor to subscribe to your gallery. Hopefully one day...

Poor Angelo. He was totally the ugliest Gen-X guy who none of the girls even looked at twice but he was the funniest and often most heroic. Although I like Synch better than him, Angelo was definitely a much-needed character. It's too bad Jubilee likes the pretty boys or I'm sure they would have gotten together.
You've definitely nailed all the Skin elements. The open shirt, the facial hair and I love the earring (did he ever have one? I can't remember...)
BTW, FERAL IS HISPANIC?! SWHAT?! But she's a wolf lady so it really barely matters. It is a shame that there aren't more visible hispanics in comics. Period. They do tend to show up more in "urban" books though.... as if that isn't insulting enough.

Skin: Yea, Bachalo's early drawings of Skin were quite grotesque. But later on, after Bachalo changed his style, Skin got a new look that was less hideous. He got a more angular nose and a more prominent chin and less facial wrinkles. And yea, he wore a hoop earring, at least in a few appearances.
Jubilee: Well she DID get together with Skin toward the end. Although I didn't love that-- I liked her with Synch and thought that's where their relationship was going. Instead they did the obvious pairing of M and Synch, which I never, ever thought worked.
Feral: Yea and Nicieza even had her say "jou" instead of "you" in some cases. I was like daaaamn, we're going there? yikes. Oh and let's not forget the added insult of the most recent reveal for her-- that her dad molested her and her sister. Stellar representation of Latino characters, Marvel.

Dodson was really the one who made Skin handsome. Then again, he always draws super hunky men. His Banshee was to die for. His men are always so beefy.
Yeah, I wanted Jubilee with Synch sooooo bad. Little Asian-American chick with the hunky black team leader = HOT. It would have been nice to see Monet realize she can't have everything no matter how perfect she may be. But obviously, the whole six month jump thing f*cked everything up so we never got to see everything play out in its natural progression.
Hahahahahaha! Oh man, she says "jou"?! That's hilarious. Now I'm imagining her speak like the nurse from Baz Lurhman's "Romeo+Juliet". You know whose backstory that would have worked really well in? Rogue's. Hell, it could even work in Emma's given how awful her father is.

Oh- I was thinking about this last night in the tub- lol. But I lost the thread it was on. About that Cyke not knowing Wallflower. That was a bullshit cheap shot by Whedon or Ellis or whoever wrote it.
I mean really? This is the guy who for decades would stay up all night updating files and reports on the X-Men... a guy who's frequently been described as not having a life outside the X-Men, all-work, no-play Scott. I refuse to believe he'd forget the name of a student. Cheap shot.
Yea, Emma's a teacher and I'll grant that her personal relationship may be deeper with the kids than some of the other senior members. Like Emma would know "oh, Wallflower's favorite color is blue- or Wallflower likes vanilla ice cream."
I hate modern Scott so much. He's almost irreparable. Well eff that, in my mind Bishop is good, M-Day and Deadly Genesis never happened, and Cyke doesn't randomly forget students.

I'm pro Scott, I guess, but nothing from the past decade or so. CC wrote his as an awkward man of duty, always having to make the tough decisions but still likable and a loyal friend. Modern Scott is a grade-A douche.
I'm also usually pro Claremont, but I truly believe bringing Jean back and making Maddie evil was a great decision. I know he was against it, but Madelyne's story arc really wasn't going anywhere interesting for me. And the whole reunion with your dead wife thing was so soap, I ate it up.
Madelyne is one of my favorite villans, and without this catalyst, I doubt she'd have gone there.
Interesting you are so pro Emma but anti Scott. Then you shouldn't mind my dream of Scott becoming normal again and less douchey and leaving Em for Jean when she comes back-- again. hehehe!

I love Maddie as an evil bitch too. She's fantastic and a better arch-nemesis for Scott than Sinister ever was. I think it was a smart play by Claremont when Marvel brought Jean back because he could have just written Maddie out altogether and she would have joined the "Where are they now?" comic girlfriend pool (which is obviously largely compiled of Batman exes >.<).
I think Emma and Scott definitely will break-up sometime. They don't have the same kind of appeal as a couple as someone like Peter and MJ or Sue and Reed (although, I hate Reed with every fibre of my being and desperately want Sue to accidentally suffocate him with an invisible bubble). BUT I do not want Jean to ever touch Scott again. He humiliated her (I mean really, of all the affairs to have you have a psychic one?! That's Jean's home turf and you freakin' defiled it) so I really think if she comes back she should completely take over X-Men duties. After all, it was pretty clear that she holds more sway in their group and could potentially perform a coup if she and Xavier work something out. I imagine she'd be pretty upset with how Scott's been treating him. Then there's the whole matter of her likely going all apeshit when she discovers her entire family is dead.... poor girl.

Ok, I know it's because i am a huge Betsy fan, and that Betsy is not as popular as Emma but...
I tend to put the Scott/Betsy affair on an as-serious level as the Scott/Emma affair.
Why do people choose to forget that moment of X-books?
I maddens me to no end when people have such a strong feeling toward the Scott/Emma affair (be it a pro or con feeling) because it makes it seem like this is the first time it's ever happened, or that it's some momentous moment.
I mean, because Emma is more popular, Marvel has chosen to make that affair the more important one, but I'm so on Team "hey didn't I read this 10 years ago and it was way more exciting then."

The thing with Betsy wasn't an affair insofar as it was Betsy putting the major moves on Scott and Jean later attempted to put the kibosh on it before getting psychically knifed by Psylocke. >.< That's how I remember it going. BUT it was just another incident of Scott's wandering eye. I mean, he should have kicked Psylocke out of the team or at least sent her onto Storm's team. Because I don't remember her going any further than kissing him. No? Then a few issues later she's dating Angel. Go figure.

LOL- I just wrote that to see your reaction. It's largely believed that it was a fantasy in either Scott or Betsy's head. One of those weird Kubert panels where you can't really tell what's going on- but basically the X-Men are having their thoughts (memories? fantasies?) displayed by some dumb villain called the Soul Skinner, and one of the images is Betsy on top of Scott in bed. Also, in the previous issue Scott walks in on Betts in her towel, closes the door, and then there's a zoomed-in panel of his smiling and looking back.
Adolescent me and my friends took that as a read-between-the-lines hint that something happened when they were in Siberia. But again, nowadays, given the implied retconizatation of the whole Scott/Betts deal, it's more widely accepted that it was an illusion.
Doesn't change the fact that it hyped me and my friends massively and that we were all GLUED to Scott/Jean/Betts triangle. The excitement I felt reading those issues is like 40x higher than Morrison's triangle.
We can either attribute it to my youth, the fact that I love Psylocke, or that I'm such a huge nostalgist, but I couldn't help but be bored and kinda mad at Morrison's storyline.
I WILL admit that Morrison's affair story was well-written, and suited current comics in a way that was definitely going to bring in more viewers.
blah blah blah, i do go on. hey im uploading new x-ppl today!

But you have to admit that Psylocke got treated as such. I mean, writers didn't really respect her much during the '90s. I suppose it's Jim Lee's fault for giving her a thong. The moment you give a character something remotely sexual in their costume that becomes their defining aspect. Just ask Power Girl.

Psylocke commands a different kind of respect though, I think. Writers may have hated her but I think she developed a soft spot in the hearts (and wangs) of fans. People always forget that in gaming, she is the most visible female X-Man in the 90's, frequently being the sole female playable. I think this gave her a fanbase unlike anyone else. It's guys and gals who see her fighting strength as the chief characteristic, and her sexuality as the more secondary one. People who think of her as a skank aren't really fans and kinda dont understand the character.
And I will point out that Emma's costumes have been similarly sexually overt but she does command a lot more overall respect with writers and fans. Whether this is because of her ethnicity, better writing, better art, or a simple sign of the times can be debated-- but I think it's a combination of all those.
Psylocke has been plagued with odd plotting and design for years but I think it's what endears me to her. I root for the underdog. And if I had a chance at writing her, I'd definitely introduce a subtle feeling of resentment at her sorta underdog status within the X-books.

Psylocke AND Storm were the most visible X-ladies in video games. I counted Storm's appearances in video games a while back and she makes 17 overall appearances and is playable in 14 of those. It's pretty crazy.
I kind of think that Chris Claremont is responsible for the complete wishy-washy treatment of Betsy over the years. She had a really strong characterization in the '90s, then she got thrust into that Japanese body and her personality started to shift. Then he jumped ship and left her to the hounds for a decade... which during that time included the Scott fiasco and the really odd Revanche thing. BUT things were looking up with Warren and the Crimson Dawn. Then Claremont comes back, she gets telekinesis, dumps Warren without ANY warning, dies and then comes back. And this new character is significantly meaner. I mean, she was constantly making snide remarks to her teammates and later had that whole panel where she's thinking nasty things about Emma. I mean, WTF is that about? Emma and Betsy never really met. Did they? Emma was comatose for most of Betsy's tenure as an X-Man, then Em was living in Massachusetts during the rest of the '90s and Betsy died when Em moved to NYC to become an X-Men staffer. But now that she's back with Warren things are looking a lot better for her. I have my fingers crossed that she'll stay the sexy British ninja chick who kicks all kinds of ass but has a heart of gold. But apparently she's going to kiss Fantomex or something.... *sigh*
It's funny because I think the whole underdog thing is what drew people to Rogue and Emma. Rogue was a D-list villain who all the X-Men hated... then all the fans ended up loving her. Emma was a D-list villain who all the X-Men hated... and the fans ended up loving her. Funny how that works. Hell, I think that's how Wolverine got most of his fans. It's usually when you shove characters down someone's throat that they get angry... I mean look at Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm. How many haters do they have?
