Description Bill Murray (left) and Owen Wilson in The life aquatic.
Watercolor on paper
20x50cm
Watercolor
paper Montval 300 g/m2
china ink

That is one of the best movies I have ever seen (by Wes Anderson). The actors are just fantastic. Typically the kind of movie in which there is no hero (actually they are more or less all loosers and they know it, that's the point).

Yeah great movie! Very slow though. Very special stuff. Text-based but even with a bit of (funny and dramatic) action.
Hope you'll like it

Haven't seen the movie, but I love this piece! You got some incredible effects with the watercolor! It adds some great organic texture to the piece without being distracting. The only thing that turns me off is the black background. It certainly highlights the figures, but I think it makes the piece a little too stark and you lost an opportunity to make it a little more interested. But I haven't seen the film, so maybe there's a theme or motif that goes with the black that I just don't understand. Still, incredible watercolor work! Some of your best!

Thanks yes this director really pays a lot of attention to backgrounds and atmospheres. This is what I like in his movies. In this one, the background is just completely dark so I stupidely reproduced it. Actually, I spent a lot of time making watercolors with too few contrast so now I do not hesitate anymore on that. Look at the movies of Wes Anderson! It's all awesome...
You surprised me, I did not imagine this painting could be one of my bests, interesting. I like it actually because it is different from what I usually do.
Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Very nice watercolours, I like how you painted the light
I also like Wes Anderson. I haven't seen The Life Aquatic, but The Royal Tenenbaums and and The Darjeeling Limited are fabulous

Ha look at it! That is just great
This is the slowest of his movies, I have to say. Very special movie. But the actors are all fabulous. They are such perfect loosers, so real humans! And the light is great all the time. Perhaps I will paint something about Darjeeling now. The light is so different in this one, and I would like to paint Schwarzman and Brody too
Thanks much for encouraging me all the time, I really appreciate. DA can be a bit cold sometimes. I put a lot of energy in my paintings for few feedback (I guess people are still in vacations also...). I really would like to have more helpful critics, even bad ones of course, something that would make me progressing.
Cheers

The first time I watched the Tenenbaums, I didn't get it - I thought it was a very weird movie. But somehow I couldn't forget it. So I watched it again and liked it enormously

I know what you mean about DA... So I'll tell you a bit more of what I think about your painting : As I said, I really like the light, because it seems to "flow" around the two people. I also like the black background, it makes the colours stand out. Did you paint the background with watercolours as well?
I also like that the texture of the paper can be seen through the blue clothes.
The only (small) parts in the picture that are not wholly convincing are Wilson's nose and mouth - they look a little bit strange.

Oh yeah about the nose and the mouth, I am not happy either. It is damn hard to make a portrait... It why I would like to practice more! This is true that I am more interested in the light in itself than in the characters. The background is made with china ink, absolutely pure. I like to use that because it gives such a depth...
I just bought some new paper today, some Arches 300g/m2 satine. Very big sheets! That is important because I was painting on some crappy paper I had to finish and the texture you are talking about (in the deep blue) directly shows the quality of the paper. I like watercolor for that, you have to think a lot about light and to let the pigments speack by themselves. It is not easy actually because it really depends how you apply the paint with your brush. Come back 2 times in the same place and the texture will not looke the same. Ultimately, I would like to do every delimitated area in one washing with all the colors mixing. That is the case of the clothes of Bill Murray in this one. I was really happy to see it dry like that.
See you soon around and thanks again

Just keep trying - I think you're very good already
Good paper is important. It can make such a difference on how your painting looks in the end. And good paintbrushes are, too - bad ones always make me angry
I hope I'll find the time to paint or draw something again, too. I'm not very good at, but I like drawing. I guess I'd have the time if I didn't do so many useless things

Yeah, time... It's always the same. We never have time, we have to take it anyway, just a matter of priority!
Cheers,
