I'm not keeping anything secret.
The way i make fog is pretty simple, soft brush tool in photoshop with very low opacity and carefully draw the fog you want. That's all i do!

I adore the ambiguity of this piece, there is just enough to make out the intense feeling of sadness and feeling of being lost upon the little girls face. Im so glad you kept the background simple, it to me, somewhat portrays the idea of pergetory (excuse my horrible spelling) or limbo
