Description Supposed to be the egyptian god Set- my interpretation of him. Not done, just a WIP but I wanted some feedback before I finished it.

Should I give him eyes? What shape should his ears be? Should he mostly be cast in shadow like how it is right now? Are the colours good? Do they need work? Etc.

So please critique!

as previously said, Anubis ears would be cool! o u o
but i'm not too familiar with egyptian mythology...

I think you should leave it in shadow, but how about a kodolith style? like this: [link]
it's basically using shadows to define shape and form, and in this case, keep things more mysterious o u o b?

oh oh and likes the vacant eyes yes yes o v o

Well, I myself love Anubis' ears, but then again, I'm crazy for Anubis... Hahah!
I don't think it would be better with eyes, but I could be awfully wrong...

On the middle of his nose, from his eyes and down, the wrinkles make it look like he's turning his head to the left for us, but then his nose is turned straight forward? Kinda bugged me

I think the color is awesome, but have you tried a bit sandier color? Like kinda yellowish/orange pyramid-sand-color? Haha, how to describe... Uhm... Like this color : [link]
I donno if it would've worked at all, but I would've tried it... But I'm no artist, though ^_^
And the shadow is grrrreat

I think you should give him glowing golden colored eyes, yes the color scheme is perfect, he SHOULD remain in mostly shadow, and you should give him ears like a Jackal but that flare out at the top instead of coming to a point, with gold caps at the tips and maybe a few earrings.

I LOVE this! I thinks he is perfect without eyes, and that if you please, you should give him ears like those of a jackal, because to me that seems to fit him. Everything else is MARVELOUS, the shadows, the surreality, EVERYTHING.

I think you should embellish him a little more, like add on the ears and make the shadows less predominant, but do KEEP them. As for eyes............. well, Its pretty damn sketch right now, and eyes would kinda destroy that, but do whatever you think is best. And the colors are nice. maybe add in some gold or red as a highlight.

Well Set is an unknown animal and people just call it the "set animal" or Typhon (sp?). Sooo really anything, though many people give him long sqaured off ears. Like giant rectangles. I like the fleshy tone of the skin too. Most egyptian gods as you know are human body animal head and I like how you gave this dude a fleshy skin tone to the animal head. More umm cohesive or something lol.

Yeah, since he's an unknown animal I wanted to draw him as a really odd looking creature that doesn't really look or resemble any animal in particular- I want him to really be seen as his own creature XP gah I repeat myself too much haha xD; Yes squared off ears is a go, I just needa figure out how to draw them to look natural. Thanks! :]

Hehe thats ok I repeat myself all the time like that Sounds like a fun challenge to draw them naturally! Oh and I forgot to give feedback on the eyes before... lol Going back to the whole mystery animal part I think you could leave them empty (as in no eyes) or just a plain eyeball with nothing but the white part. Ya know? Like umm like an eye that doesn't exist but doesn't belong to something already lol. Hmmm Either way I like either no eyes at all or a solid color eye (all white/black). All your choice in the end though ^^

Supaslim [2010-09-20 16:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, Set is typically depicted with squared ears... so I think that would be good

As for eyes, I'm a little iffy. I kind of like them empty, but I think a solid glowy color like orange would work too.

I think this could be made better if his head weren't so huge in comparison to his muzzle. Maybe make it narrower?

Harro supah sliiiimmm
I always read your name as "supalism" for some reason, I tend to do that when there's a word with lots of letters T^T or more like all the letters blend together XP

Squared ears are hard to draw, its tough to make them look organic yet squareish at the same time T^T I guess it'd the square-ness would be achieved by rounding the corners just enough to tell that it's square-ish yet natural looking?

Hmm a glow could work, but might distract attention from the rest of the drawing? I find that's what it usually does, I abuse the powers of the glow DX I usually get glow-happy and make everything glow from the inside >>; I could try it and see if I can get it to work out though.

Yeah, I'll make the muzzle and head more porportionate, it does look a bit too odd, I intended it to look sort of odd and like "oh hey now that's different" but it doesn't look cohesive in the image durp I'm using too big words

lulz, you're not the only one. X3

I understand entirely! I can't wait to see the finished piece, because I really do love it so far.

Also, for some reason it vaguely reminds me of 's work. I don't quite know why.

I actually like it without the eyes, since the natural tendancy is to focus on the eyes this forces the viewer to look him in the teeth. The subdued, single color palette makes the tteh stand out as well. In order to keep that the focus, possibly keep the ears vague and shadowy.

Anuwolf In reply to Viergacht [2010-09-20 19:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmm that is true. In a way eyes are overdone, people draw pictures of eyes, put all the details into the eyes, and everything else usually would lack that much detail. So I can avoid that problem by having no eyes Teeths deserve more attention
durr hurr

Yesh I was thinking the same thing

Personally I don't like the look of it, doesn't make sense to me at all x) It's nicely done and all but this aint something I ever would draw Looks like the face is to long for me me.

No offense ment! Well as far as I know is the Egyptian gods "animals"? Try to make some sort of animal eyes for it. Probably pointy ears would be good. Give it gargoyle ears.

Anuwolf In reply to eXiidus [2010-09-20 19:31:33 +0000 UTC]

I appreciate your honestly XP

The point of the face is to be long (I thought it'd be neat to overexagerate this feature of Set), since Set isn't really a certain kind of animal (more of his own creature). I was trying to make it odd looking intentionally, to give a more sinister or unworldly look, but I guess I can thicken the snout or thin the face to make it look more in porportion :]

I'll try giving him eyes and I'll see if that works with the image. Gargoyle ears? What are those like? xP

My fault, didnt see it was the god Set O_o. My fault! According to the wikipedia he look like an anteater with rectangular ears.

I have no idea how gargoyle ears, was thinking of the ones from World of warcraft, the bats or what they are called. When I looked the god up, it didnt sound like a good idea any longer xD
