I, personally, do like this piece. I love the expression on the character's face, you can tell he's obviously deep in thought. And the golden glow of the candles reflecting off the bookshelves are so welcoming, not eerie at all. There's just this little reflection of yellow on the stems of all of them, and I like it. I also love the warm colors on the clothes.
The shading isn't bad, and I just LOVE how you used the textures for the table an the floor. It's a very warm sight.
A few things I think you could work on is the perspective.
Technically, the bookshelves lining the wall should be pretty much parallel to the sides of the drawing, they should be straight. Then the horizontal lines would be parallel to the floor. The character's left arm should be closer to his body. You could also work on small details like the jar of glowing ink, but I love the glassy, transparent shading you used.
Overall, this isn't a bad piece of art, but it could be a lot better. Just keep improving, maybe you can come back and redraw this piece later on, and you'll see the difference!

Thanks so much Cliselle!
You definitely gave me a lot more stars than I deserve XD but your points are awesome. Yes, one day from now *stares into distance,* I'm going to redo this drawing and see if I've gotten any better~
Until then, though, comments like yours are MUCH appreciated <3!

Haha, not true,
I thought the other ones were kind of harsh and you deserve some pride at least. ^^
But yeah, can't wait to see it someday!

Woah. First time doing this, so don't freak out on me ;-; I'll try not to sugarcoat.
Anyway, I'll start with the things I see that could use some bit of critique. Yeah, the perspective is a bit off. But mainly in the floor/bookshelves area. Might I suggest looking at some two-point perspective tutorials to see just how those Picasso people get it done. (Which I need to do too tbh) Obviously the point-of-view is from above, but I notice that Runi looks almost like he is seen from a level point of view. Instead of having his head larger and his body smaller, you sort of just kept it level. If we were to look from above, we would see more of his hairline and less of his neck and chest.
I notice that the perspective is also slightly to the left instead of directly in front of him. His shoulders should've been angled accordingly. The table and chair don't align in means of perspective either. Also, the two pieces of furniture don't look like they are set on the floor ;-; The floor looks more like a background instead of a surface. But that is easily fixable with practice on perspective technique <3
The hand on his cheek is a bit off, looking like it lacks a palm. (A common mistake, I do it aaaalll the time ffff) Just make sure to emphasize where the wrist is. Otherwise it just looks like an arm with fingers attached to it.
What I like: THE DETAIL. Ugh, girl, where you get the patience to draw all those little knick-knacks and so accurately as well, I have no idea. The candle holder especially lovely with it's swirls and everything.
The LIGHTSOURCES <3 You seem to have a pretty good grasp as to how light touches surfaces and where shadows form! Which, in all honesty, so many skilled anatomical artists still need to work on. I especially love the shadows along the desk underneath the different items. I like how you didn't overblur and how you paid attention to shadow shapes.
The CONCEPT <3
I love love love the concept. The whole "staying-up-alone-in-the-dark-doing-research" thing has been seen so often in many amazing movies. BECAUSE it is such a great concept~
I love how you chose a different point-of-vie (above is one of my favorites) since it makes the picture much more dramatic.
Overall, I REALLY LIKE this piece~ I can say with confidence that I think it is one of the best, if not the best piece, in your gallery! You went above and beyond what you usually do and definitely surpassed what you thought were your limit (at least in my opinion). Good work!
Love,
Aerynn~

*crying* Love you Aerynn!!
Yeah - perspective is what .__.; I hadn't even looked at a tutorial when I did this, SOO that probably would have made a WORLD of difference XD
And HIS WRIST. It actually looked good in the sketch! I spent a good 50 hours on that wrist. But it got totally lost in translation - er, lost in the lineart.
Thank you!! This was a great critique!! *so happy*

I LOVE YOU TOO OMFG <3
AHH YEAH!
Seeeeee dude, even without a tutorial and just plain talent, you already did an amazing job! Can you even imagine how much more amazing you can get with a bit extra help?^^!
I know that some artists see using references as "cheating" or even "embarrassing" but really, I believe that it can be SUCH a huge help in improvement.Β
Ahaaa lol WRISTSTSSKFJDSKF I hate them so much DDDD:
You're so welcome ~ Can't wait to see what else you come up with~
