Description
An image commissioned by a very talented friend of mine - corresponding to her tastes and some of her lovely fanfiction as well ^_^Nomura Mansai as Kurama Tengu with a Kurama tengu Noh Mask.
DERWENT Color pencils on CANSON pastel paper (not the best idea, but makes a very interesting texture ^_^

nope, i don't like watercolor pencils - I prefer to use real watercolors instead. But I love derwents - their dry pastels are gold, so i suppose WC can be nice as well ^_^

so far i haven't tried any pastels, but i can say i totally believe you. and since you have bridled the brush, true watercolours will be the right choice.
they are good, but i am not very satisfied with them.i am not satisfied with any pencil, it's probably my hand and the not enough determination and courage to press on the paper, that i can't make the drawings as i please.

Wao...it seems I've missed this wonderful update, but you must know already how much I adore this work, one with such wonderful colors and such realistically-stylized Mansai ^.^ The shadows are so soft and comforting...

Yeah, i liked the colorscheme here myself, i was so working hard, since i didn't have a reference for shadows and colors in this colorcheme, i found various night-shots with ppl and tried to reassemble the approximate color-palette.

This is a really great piece; the saturated blues that are scattered throughout the shadows really glow through. :3

he is both actor in a Kyougen (comedic intermissions in Japanese classic Noh theater) and actor in some movies, having on his conscience rather amusing and too HERO-type series as well. But he is a cute button, so we love him even more for it. He also played Hamlet and Oedipus rex - so to say, has a lot of interests, this man. Look him up - he is charming ^_^

well it was intermission in the times when plays lasted for days, and Noh plays are very spiritual, so there were small skits to lighten things up - now it's a separate very respectable genre.

lol, from what i see - Japanese have a genetic disregard for noise around them - I saw people sleep during all kinds of theatrical performances, even rather loud ones... I always wondered if it is worth spending money for good seats and then sleep thought the whole thing!
But well, people came and went - since in the beginning whole thing was under the sky, and gradually the theaters were built.

This one is really one of your best. looking it over, the dark tones, the lovely way you rendered the skin and just how he seems lit up by pale moonlight, just honestly breath taking. His eyes really do seem to stare into you, its one of the most grabbing points of the picture along with the tengu mask. its almost as if hes emerging from shadows, triumphant in some trick or long forged scheme.

he is a trickster - this actor he seems like such a powerful force, with sparkly humor, healthy egoism, and endless kindness. At least this is his image for me, here we made him a bit devious and who knows what little secrets he hides behind the mask.

This one is lovely-- I adore the depth, and the color scheme. Nice use of dark darks and light lights!! It works really well for me.

he also has the following effect in his eyes - the one when you can see him looking at you from any angle you look at him , even upside down - I tried my best to save the effect after I deleted the sketch and started coloring.
