Maybe Anderson was secretly admiring Sherlock, just like John? He was a big fan of Sherlock, but didn't want him to know that, because then Donovan would laugh at him. However Sherlock knew about this. He deduced it a very long time ago and just waited for the right moment to amaze Anderson with his genius deduction about Anderson being fan of Sherlock, and then use him for something important. But Anderson was such a brainless guy, so he couldn't help Sherlock anyway, except being killed instead of him.
