Awesome stuff here, I really love macabre work. Still, I think I'm the -only- person here openly saying that I completely disagree with you. I hope you realize that most of the food you eat today has been genetically manipulated either way. Its called domestication and artificial selection... genetic manipulation is doing the same thing but skipping decades of breeding that our ancestors had to do. I hope you realize corn isn't a real plant.... it is completely man made, so much so it can't survive in the wild without us.

And besides, life on earth isn't static. God or not, life goes on, changes, and adapts.

Err, not really - I'm not sure how much you know about the science behind this - because I don't want to talk down to you - but there is a fundamental difference in cross breeding and inserting genes from one species into another - it's going to be a fecking lot of decades of breeding before you can get plants and animals to breed together.

Your comment about corn not being real is, well, crap. Corn is a real plant - most corn will survive in the wild - I have corn come up from previous crops every year - I don't sow sterile hybrid corn from companies trying to keep profits high - I suspect you are speaking about hybrid types - and in some places that's all you can buy.

Advance genetic manipulation takes genes from one species and inserts them into another - there ain't no breeding in the world that our ancestors did can do that.

Just for the record - I don't care either way - I do care for reasoned debate.

I'm pretty knowledged on it, and I never mentioned anything about cross breeding and gene insertion. I'm talking about artificial selection, and that's something completely different. Calling cross breeding "evolution" is also a horrible detriment to what evolution is supposed to mean after all, because they're completely unrelated either way.

And corn is -not- a naturally occuring plant, it was generated in the region south where I live. In case you didn't know, corn didn't grow naturally in Australia, it was generated in what is now known as Mexico. It is a North American creation, and there have been a lot of cultural studies about it in the region I live. I'm not sure what kind of corn you eat, but corn, like a lot of other fruits, was artificially selected so that it wouldn't drop it seeds. My anthropology professor, Dr. Carmichael, is a specialist on Native American culture ( [link] ) is one key source, and I even found this on corn as well: [link]

But artificial selection is not gene splicing.

The corn argument I concede /slightly/ - it is a very different plant to its relatives in the wild - but so too is a large amount of fruit, vegetables, animals, and people! I do realise that corn is not Australian - very little of what we eat here is natural. But selecting for fitness is still very different to gene splicing - with slecting for future generations one can trace back the originals - which is possible with corn - and there are a lot of papers written on the subject of corn.

I never mentioned evolution - what I was questioning is your likening gene manipulation to husbandry - as I said - breeding for strength is one thing - adding genes from another species is another - the jump is potentially too great and could cause unknown problems - like the recent difficulties with a genetically modified pea the CSIRO tested here.

The same thing does happen in nature already - eg: recent strains of flu - genes cross from different species to create something different with unknown results - crossng two types of pigs or corn one can reasonably guess the outcome - adding genes from plants into animals and visa versa creates something with unknown potential.

Well, I don't even think we're arguing anything really in that case, 'cause artificial selection isn't gene splicing, and I never said it was. I mention "evolution" due to the title, which I felt betrayed its premise which was the whole point of my argument XD

yes...it could get very weird in the years to come...
on that subject of people cloning cats. did you see the first (well for us in oz) story about the living cat they cloned the two copies off? news image showed them in seperate glass containers. apparently in the very first succesful attempts, the original cat went into a killing frenzy on its clone.... doesn't that seem to be a pretty obvious explanation of what all that IS? any knowledge of bootleg videos of those attempts, they ARE out there somewhere. perhaps, that would be a "destroy all evidence" scenario no?

Well done.

And things will be very bad but we will have no control over the greed of companies.

There was a woman who spent 50k to have her dead cat cloned. She could have picked any of the cats in the shelters but she wanted her darling "Nicky" back. Shades of the movie "6th Day".
