Description Okay, so I've been drawing a bestiary in my new sketchbook as preliminary work for a book I hope to write. Either that, or a series of short stories. Either way, the concept is to rescue "endangered" beasts and their stories. Of course, more common magical creatures are offered refuge (especially ones getting changed by modernization), as are mundane people who want to help them and have certain qualifications, but that gets into a lot of detail I haven't yet worked out.

So this is the gryphons page. There were a few I stumbled over later that might need to be added, but for now I'm working with these four. The information is horrid, I know. More of a basic field guide for these creatures, I guess.

I hardly ever put shadows or highlights on my digital work, so I'm very proud of this. I think I did good character work here too. Each one looks unique to me, each with a different personality. I think I even conveyed age and gender in creatures that are hard to show it, so that's great. What do you think?

P.S. Yes, that keythong does have a familiar color scheme. He is very similar to Kovu from Disney's The Lion King Two: Simba's Pride. I thought the darker lion scheme suited him. I love red lions, but this guy didn't quite seem to rate that color scheme.

I WOULD LOVE FEEDBACK! Critique, comments, questions, concerns, compliments, anything at all.

Rather than internet resources, I actually went over quite a few old legends and books for these, cross-referencing sources to get as accurate a depiction as I'm capable. I'm aware I don't have every variant of the gryphon here. I'm also fairly sure that, seeing as it only appears in 15th century heraldry, the keythong is hardly the only example of a male gryphon and the dichotomy between male and female gryphons as being winged or not is a more modern development, especially considering that the gryphon proper is supposed to mate for life, implying that both genders are present.

Also, the word is "mean," not "mine."

Usually, to make a plausible argument, one uses complete sentences and proper grammar and punctuation. I won't ask you to cite references, seeing as this isn't really an academic discussion.

Also, would you possibly be referring to the Simurgh? It is a Persian creature that is sometimes depicted with the body of a bird and the face of a dog and the legs of either a lion or dog. It is strictly female and considered King of Birds, and is enormous, similar to the Roc. Even using the Internet for a quick search of the term despite the inherent unreliability of many sources there, "lupogryph" is a modern phrase, and out of the top ten hits of a Google search for the term, only one even attempted to give information on the creature. In that case, the author also mentioned the Simurgh and nothing else.

Wonderful. I'm pretty sure this isn't something I want to pursue, considering it a.) has nothing to do with the project you left a comment on, b.) is old work I'm probably not going to revisit, and c.) I have other things to worry about. I'm sure you can find someone else to talk to about this, because at this point, I'm done.

From your comments on other gryphon work, it looks like most people aren't buyin' what you're saying. Also, considering that gryphons are a mythical creature, I'm pretty sure artists are allowed to interpret them in different ways. I personally think having all male gryphons be wingless is stupid, and nowhere in modern stories or past myths have I heard a word about it. So let it drop.
