Oh gosh looking at this on deviantart for some reason allows me to see more things I don't even know but I love how the lineart is lighter in certain places especially where the light hits. That's really really cool, and wow I love the shading in their hair too, I can't stop looking at it!

THAT'S GREAT I'M SO GLAD YOU LIKE IT yess I was looking for some quote to illustrate for you and this line happened in a really brief scene but I chose it because I think it's generally easier to notice and remember how dependent Soren is on Ike, but Ike relies on and trusts Soren a lot as well and is willing to remind him of it when he's doubting his ability to contribute to the team.
(I also wanted to do something other than their support because I think practically everyone who's drawn them has already done that scene at the end heh. Actually I'd like to see more art that portrays Soren's cold/antisocial personality because in most fanart he comes across as openly acting a lot softer than he actually presents himself 
Haha I'm not surprised because tumblr resizes stuff in weird ways (and on an unrelated note is generally terrible for presenting landscape-oriented images <_<) but I'm glad you like the varying colors of the lines, I don't always do it but I think it can add a lot when lineart isn't all colored the same :'D I'm glad you like the shading too, I'm really happy you like it so much!!

They do make a pretty damn impressive team on the battlefield, I have to admit that. You've really captured the essence of the friendship between them - and just what that essence is has been cleverly left up to the viewers. Like a great artwork should do, there are many interpretations open here.

I don't get that particular meaning as strongly; while I acknowledge it's a common shipping, if I had to bring my opinion to the table, I'd say that Soren might have more than friendship towards Ike, but Ike's too oblivious to work it out. He's too besotted with his one true love - meat.

I have no personal investment in it as a ship, nor do I think it's a canon pairing (I don't think any FE pairings are canon, except ones like Pent/Louise where the player has no influence on them). I like the fact that after all his early years of rejection Soren finally finds someone worth trusting in Ike, and how even when he believes that he's worthless and belongs nowhere, Ike still values and respects him as a crucial member of the company... and Ike, in return for showing basic human kindness and willingness to overlook society's stigmas and barriers, gains a fiercely loyal adviser and friend. They're definitely key players in each other's lives, at any rate.

I don't have any shipping investment in it, either, and I agree with your point about the flexibility of pairings in the series. I think the few which are established are Marth and Shiida, Sigurd and Deirdre, Pent and Louise, and possibly Micaiah and Sothe (though Radiant Dawn's support system was pretty iffy in terms of depth...)
The backstory between them is really well done, I do agree with that. Something like that bit of kindness Ike showed Soren can dramatically change a life for the better... it's what we need more of in life.

Okay, I realized about two days after replying to your original comment that there were probably a dozen better ways for me to answer; I'm sorry about that. I am glad though that you think I captured the friendship between them, thank you. The FE canon is indeed flexible and for that reason several of my FE pictures are open to interpretation because they're based on canon lines, as this one is.
I'm not entirely in agreement that great art should be open to interpretation, if it's used to discourage authors from stating things clearly or to disregard authorial intent, though I do enjoy how leaving things open-ended allows people to connect with and find meaning in them in many different ways. Art is open to interpretation regardless of the creator's intent, though, so I'd feel awkward taking credit for that and that awkwardness is primarily what caused me to give such a short answer initially.
Anyway, yeah, it is admirable how Ike is willing to look past superficial distinctions in people and extend help to anyone in need--and rather ironic that although that compassion saved Soren, the attitude Soren projects to others is quite the opposite. The way he was treated in the past gives him plenty of reason to distrust people, but he doesn't seem to realize that if he acted less cold, he'd most likely find more people willing to be friendly to him... so instead he puts Ike on a pedestal and shuts out everyone else, which seems like it's bound to disappoint him sooner or later.
