Well, from what I've seen I think it strengthens/expands on the bond that they had in XIII, but anything else is up to interpretation. I don't think there's ever really been any canon support for it, but they do work closely together for the whole game here and are there for each other in key moments of development.

Lightning Returns, from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. It just came out in Japan, but it won't be out overseas for another three months.

Ahh Final Fantasy is such a classic series, I definitely recommend trying them at least once; they've got this mix of story and gameplay that always keeps me going once I start them. Though I'm going to do myself a disservice (since I seem to only draw XIII fanart) and not recommend the XIII trilogy as your first Final Fantasy because the gameplay in XIII is weaker than earlier installments. I still enjoyed it (and I thought the sequel corrected all the major problems while introducing new ones in the form of less developed characters), but I wouldn't hold XIII as a representative of the series' gameplay. Try VII or IX instead, they're my favorites gameplay-wise (and IX has my favorite characters outside of XIII).
Haha I actually feel really guilty only drawing XIII fanart when I'm not even that attached to it as a game, but for some reason I really latched onto the characters.

Ah yes, if you're attracted to the graphics then you may like the current games after all, since the XIII series has beautiful detailed art. I can't say the same of the older ones since they're now outdated, though they had great cinematics for their time. Who knows, you may like XIII if you give it a try; a lot of the complaints were from people disappointed that it didn't live up to past installments of the series, but it's still a pretty decent game on its own. It depends a lot on how much patience you have for sitting through a lot of cutscenes and repetitive battles, since the first half of the game is more movie than game and there's a lot of grinding involved (though I went for the platinum trophy so I ground a lot more than I actually needed just to beat the game). The art is definitely pure eye candy though, so if you find it worth playing something just to see that, maybe you'll like it.
I think a large reason I'm attached to the characters is more because of Japanese fanart than their portrayals in the game itself though, haha.
