When I first saw that in the game I was like: "Why does he look like the young Deku Tree in Orarina Of Time!?"

This is so amazing.Β I love the touch of light streaming in in the corner.Β It just adds something even more beautiful to a scene that was already so beautifully sad.

Thank you so much for this beautiful comment! The way you wrote this is lovely and makes me feel like I managed to do this scene justice; thank you for pointing out the light in the corner, I'm really happy it adds to the feeling of the scene! Great work. Β I always loved this part of the story. Β If you watch the ending credits in A Link to the Past, you will see the flute boy and his father re-united, as if the Golden Power brought the boy back to life. Β Happy ending after all.
The priest in the Sanctuary comes back to life too - FYI.

All of the feels! ALL OF THEM!Β Β
I still remember this moment, because when I was little (like 6 or 7) I didn't understand English and couldn't understand his instructions to find the flute, let alone play it for him.
When I was older and had learned the language I could finally grant the Flute Boy's final request, and I also got to see him turn into a lifeless, numb little tree stump.Β
It was sad and horrifying in a way, and it left me with a sense of powerlessness and finality, but also a sense of purpose. Even if I couldn't save him I would see to it that no-one else had to die.
Which made the ending all the sweeter.
Thank you for making this.

This.... This honestly is the kind of comment that makes doing art feel worthwhile. Thank you for writing this.
Β
That's a really amazing story. I can imagine that because of the language barrier this sidequest was a much bigger puzzle and mystery, making it all the more memorable when you were finally able to discover the Flute Boyβs fate. Numb, sad, and powerless are exactly the words that fit that sceneβyou had done everything he asked and fulfilled his last request, but there was the sense of emptiness and helplessness that you couldnβt do anything more, couldnβt truly save him. Itβs great that the scene gave you motivation to fight even harder for the sake of everyone still hanging on in the midst of the chaos, and of course it was beautiful to see the results in the ending. What I love about scenes like this is how they make you believe in the world youβre trying to save, like your efforts really do make a difference to those around you.
Thank you for making a difference to me by leaving this comment; itβs seriously so valuable to me that you found this so meaningful. Iβm glad I was able to remind you of such a significant moment; thank you for sharing your story!

Poor Deku child...that game was GREAT.Β I don't know why people bash it so much, sure it was short, but it didn't lack in story telling elements!Β Skullkid, the mask, the moon, and Kafei and Anju alone can bring tears to your eyes!

Majora's Mask is excellent; although nostalgia and art style preference cause me to rank OoT and WW slightly above it on my favorites list, I consider MM to be the Zelda game with the most depth to its universe, themes, and character interactions. I actually have a preference for shorter games with a tighter focus, and the way MM's themes tied together into a coherent whole really made the experience stand out. Definitely had some of the best storytelling elements in the series.
...although this fanart is actually of A Link to the Past--that's the Flute Boy on the stump. I was surprised myself how much his tree sprite looked like the Deku Butler's son when I started drawing it. Both of those two had tragically memorable story arcs, though the one in MM was sadder.

Wakerra In reply to aquanut [2014-02-18 22:16:31 +0000 UTC]
Aye, Majora's Mask did have many sad story arcs...its probably why I like it so much.Β Something about a good sad story I just love
Link to the Past, eh?Β I was wondering if this really was MM art, but according to one of your comment responses you said it was, so I figured as much.Β Indeed, the little form on the stump does resemble the Butler's son, but he wasn't deformed on a stump, nor in the middle of a forest, rather a chasm of random platforms in front of a tree tunnel.Β Still, a great picture!
BTW, Skullkid and Mask make an Assist Trophy appearance in the new smash game serebii.net/smashbros3dswiiu/a⦠He looks so AMAZING! I wish they made a remake of that game for the 3DS like they did Ocarina...It would be beautiful~

lol so cute the way the baby deku tree looks in the manga is simply adorable, but this more realistic picture adds a bit of magic to that adorableness =^ ^=

aquanut In reply to Unheard-Canon [2013-12-02 12:29:23 +0000 UTC]
Actually no, it's the Flute Boy from A Link to the Past. I think they may have based the Deku Butler's son on him judging by how much the ingame sprite resembles the tree in Majora's Mask.

Meepilybuff In reply to aquanut [2013-12-11 02:40:14 +0000 UTC]
But a Link to the Past came first, so I think it's more likely that the Flute Boy was the inspiration for the Deku Butler's son.
