There it was again.

The heavy sighing, the solemn ruby eyes. He was looking out the window while holding his head up, as if gravity had made it ten times heavier today. The most distinct feature that you had noticed was the silent and still nature of the shadow himself, sitting in the same chair that he had been for hours now.

It’s ironic actually. A shadow of the great and noble hero Link, yet he’s more obnoxiously loud than the real thing. When he had made himself known in your presence, it took a sinister flash of his eyes for you to understand what you were getting into. He’s a jokester, for a lack of better words, in the most evil of ways. More charismatic than any actual human, it took a few months for you to warm up to his…vivid nature. Not to forget his own sexual flair, which he finds absolutely necessary to flaunt in front of you. But you never actually thought much of it because flirting had been his thing towards a lot of young women. In the end, you were pretty much the only one that stuck around.

And this conclusion lead to a lot of factors. One of them being the cause of his depression. As you recall from the so many other times the gloomy atmosphere had reigned upon him, Dark Link had expressed that there wasn’t much to look forward to in life. Of course his alter ego- the one you believed to be his real self- found great joy in screwing with other's heads. But you guessed that maybe all of the joyous harms and schemes became lonely once in a while. Being in the dark had its own side effects, even to him.

Look at the actual Link. You could say that he was one of the most famous people in Hyrule right now while Dark hadn’t been able to absorb a single drop of admiration.

He was left in the dark, where most people probably believed him to belong.

Well, not you at least. You always felt obligated to help him out of his silly trances. Although you weren’t absolutely fond of the bombastic personality he acquired, it was much better than the awkward silence throughout the building. The only thing left to build the bridge was to find the materials.

“Hey Dark…” you slipped inside his bedroom. The figure sitting at the window had not even flinched at your entrance, nor at the squeak of the door.

“Link” you walked over to the silhouette, rubbing his upper back to gather any attention you could. His head tilted up at you, but only to give those sad eyes that caged agony. He didn’t speak for a moment, only to wait for what you would say next.

“Did you want to go for a walk? The sun is setting so it’ll be a lot cooler. We can go lie somewhere and look at the stars or something.”

He glared softly for a moment into your (e/c) orbs before sighing once more, looking into the very famous window. “Why would I go outside to look at the stars when I can look at them right here idiot.”

You furrowed your brows before giving a warm smile, as if he could have seen it with his back turned to you. “Because it’s better than sitting inside all day. I’m afraid that you’ll turn into a statue if you stay here any longer.”

There was a heavy silence.

“Let it be then” he finally breathed, not even a little phased at your retort.

Your soul dropped a little at the failure of the conversation. You were sure that the little sunlight still out would prove to be an excellent way to lift his spirits, but it had just made things worse. There had to be something that could help him feel better, even if it was just something…tiny.

That’s when it hit you. Looking out at the window before you, there were glimmers of yellow light sparkling in the evening air. Schools of them, yet you knew it would only take a few to bring light into his dulled mood.

Glow bugs. They were perfect.

“Ok Darky. If you won’t come outside, then I’ll bring the outside to you.” He was still statue-like as you grabbed a few empty jars from a nearby shelf, making your way outside. The breeze hit you fast as it danced through your (h/c) hair. You tried your best to stay away from the window your friend looked through so the jars would be a surprise. It didn’t matter whether he cared about it or not because you were excited about your master plan. And that’s all that mattered right now.

“Only for a little while guys” you cooed at the trapped bugs. Tightening the lid shut, you ran inside to greet Link with the item.

“Hey” you walked inside the bleak margin over towards him. There, you planted two mason jars full of the flying lights so they were exactly in his view. Despite being still for so long, Dark Link suddenly moved the hand from his chin as he looked over at the lit jars. You knelt over, making sure you were eye-leveled with him so you could see his changed expression.

“I know you probably feel alone in the dark sometimes, but there’s no reason to feel that way. You’re an awesome person as yourself and no one else. If people can’t give you light, then let these bugs give you light. There’s always a way to find it.”

Dark Link’s expression definitely changed, but not in the way that you had wanted it to. He narrowed his eyes at you, analyzing your features. He pursed his lips as if he was confused at your action, but said nothing for the longest time. Finally, he stood up from his seat. Grabbing one of the mason jars, he clicked open the window doors. He opened the jar and let the bugs go free.

“What are you doing? I worked hard to capture them for you.”

It was silent once again as he watched the bugs flow freely into the night. You waited for him to speak again, although you were saddened by the latest attempt to make him happy. You were sure that the bugs, basking in an array of their own glow would be appreciated. Even if just a little bit.

You watched the male stretch his arms out before looking down at you.

“You know what? I think if anyone, I’m the idiot here.”

You didn’t have time to question his actions as knelt down to you. He tucked a piece of hair behind your ear before meeting your lips with his, deliberately making a peck into a passionate caress. At that moment, you were stunned. Spur of the moment, most definitely. But, without a doubt, you eventually met ends with him. He ghosted his arms around your waist as if to be careful not to break you, and you locked your arms around his neck as if you’d lose him if you didn’t.

Eventually, he leaned in further and the kiss became rough. You could tell that your precious Dark Link was back to normal.

He broke the kiss and gazed into your eyes, arms still protectively around your figure. The sadness in his ruby orbs had been substituted with an arrogant yet amorous yearning. Your view was intoxicating him with a glimmer of hope.

You finally had the breath to speak up.

“Um…Dark. What was that...?”

“About?” He huskily answered. He drew you in to whisper in your ear.

“I didn’t need glow bugs to make me happy. You were my light all along.”
