Description Another comissioned piece

this was a real headache to made (or maybe the headache was produced by all the sulfuric vapours I inhaled working on this)

well, It was a lot more difficult than I tought at first

it's all made in 950 silver

some wire and lots and lots of pieces soldered toguether (I almost did'n use the saw for this.... O.o)

Ah the vapor of liver of sulfur. The trouble with jewelry making, just about anything is toxic to the touch and definitely inhaling it is not a good thing. I really like this cross, it's really pretty. I love the wire design in the middle of it. Excellent job

Aranglinn In reply to Klarenden [2009-03-07 19:43:30 +0000 UTC]

not only liver of sulfur but also sulfuric acid xD

yeah, everything is so toxic (and everything ends so hot... I've burned myself countless times xDD

many thanks

Klarenden In reply to Aranglinn [2009-03-07 20:00:56 +0000 UTC]

lol, well any kind of acid is just bad. The students in the class constantly make me tell them why it's not safe to inhale the acid bath. Describing poison fumes should be good enough.

I've lost track of burns. I don't think about it anymore. The only thing that I seem to notice are really bad bad bad handsaw cuts!! I've got three file cuts on my right index finger right now and one heavy handsaw blade cut on my right index finger...bleh. If you pick this up as commission work, your hands will be like this always lol.

And you are very welcome

jajaj xDD yeah, I cut my fingers with the saws always xD. the funny think is that I have always noticed when it's going to happen, it's like "mmm, I'm going to cut myself... and I can't do anything to stop it"

Klarenden In reply to Aranglinn [2009-03-10 21:02:57 +0000 UTC]

lol cuts.....thats a jeweler's number one bestfriend lol. I had to take a break this week, 4 of my fingers are bruised and cut from the saw blades. But it seems like the more you try to resist the cut when you see it about to happen, it only makes it worse.

Marcusstratus In reply to Aranglinn [2009-01-07 22:20:47 +0000 UTC]

aye, that's totally something I'd never do... but I suppose with all your experience, it's easier these days then when you started.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aranglinn In reply to Marcusstratus [2009-01-08 04:03:59 +0000 UTC]

well, this still was really hard to made, but yeah, also it was a LOT easier than when I started...

I'd still prefer to do it casting or try something diffenrent... but I've had not enought time to find somewhere to learn that yet

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Marcusstratus In reply to Aranglinn [2009-01-12 23:41:10 +0000 UTC]

yeah, and the facilities are another matter. the kiln, the centrifuge, etc.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aranglinn In reply to Marcusstratus [2009-01-13 00:58:48 +0000 UTC]

indeed... well, now that I think about it.... I've never found a jeweler who could work in casting

I've seen casted pieces in jewelry stores, of course, but never have seen an artisan who can...

In fact, the only person I know of having casting knowledge and that have told me all I know... is my dentist :S xD

yep....I don't know if I will actually make everything, but I want to know how

Though I know I would definitely use the metalwork and lapidary

and yes, you can

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wibbledile In reply to Aranglinn [2009-01-03 15:40:07 +0000 UTC]

I think that it would be great if you put a texture on the backpiece, to create contrast. Not sandblasting though, rather put a broken drillbit in your hangingmotor. First practice on another piece because the texture will vary by the way the drillbit is broken. (sircular movements work best) Sorry if this is all stuff you already know!

biltongboy [2009-01-03 05:04:01 +0000 UTC]

very flippen good!! the only thing that I can see that is an issue is the uneven finishing on the circular piece at the back! You might have messed a little solder there and tried to clean it up using files or silicon wheels! this will never give you the absalute crisp effect that distinguishes a great piece!! Try to do as much soldering from the rear of the piece, then remove the excess later! But apart from that I would battle with this! far too many curves for my style! keep it up! cant wait to see what you will post later in this year!
