Well, I'm just a beginner... but I used a tripod, a remote shutter release (in my case I have DSLR Controller app, by Chainfire, on my Samsung Galaxy S2, attached by cable to my Canon). Set the camera to Bulb setting which allows longer exposure than Manual. I had a few goes, but this one I manually opened the shutter, and I closed the shutter at about 20 minutes. Other considerations are the ISO and depth of field. Because the town was a fair distance away, I set a medium f stop. But playing around with the setting is half the fun.
I won't lie... I had to clean up the lighting and exposure in Lightroom 5 until I got something appealing. After all, it was very dark in real life... I couldn't see the trees, or even the ground in front!
Have a go. It is really worth the effort. And regardless, I now know more about my camera and what it can do.
