Japanese Red Lung

An aggressive species of lung characterized by its glaring and vibrant red color. Inhabiting various freshwater rivers and lake habitats, and even venturing briefly into saltwater environments, able to effortlessly hunt prey in water just as well as on land, anything from deer to sea lions is fair game to them. With a hefty size of around 22ft long they are undisputed rulers in their environments and will readily bully other predators, such as black bear and the now extinct Honshū wolf and even humans, from their kills and territory with their bright red color giving them an imposing visual deterrent, if pushed on the defensive however they can use a non-lethal but effective chemical spray to drive away interlopers. An interesting fact is they can be found anywhere a fruiting sakura tree is, this is because while the tree is fruiting they will consume the fruit, petals, and leaves in vast quantities and convert the coumarin contained within into their defensive bile, the fruit is also responsible for giving them their bright red hue.

It has a reputation as being a known man eater and will actively hunt humans as much as any other prey species, sadly this conflict has greatly reduced their numbers within the last few decades leading to this beautiful species being in danger of extinction.
