I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I live long enough for a MCU reboot - I'll even just take a non-main comic universe - where this is canon. I mean Hell, excluding gender roles in warfare during the Second World War, if either MCU Steve or Bucky had been a girl it would have been all but canon, I mean childhood friend romance mixed with pain and adversity in the heart of war? You can't get more textbook how to set two people up to be romantically connected.
