This is a collab between me and iProphe7. His starfield and planet was awesome! take the time to stare blankly at teh screen in amazment... *nods*This is the link for iProphe7's deviantart account: [link]
iProphe7 did the bushing and the bg, and I did the render. DIG THOSE FUNKY DETAILS XD XD
The render was done in 3D Studio Max, and iProphe7 used Photoshop 7 to do the bg.

Looks like the planed was modelled in 3ds max and textured in Photoshop. There are plenty of planet texturing tutorials on the web.
