Description "Athair, can I take Nihilo with us?" Caetus hefted the larva a little higher and his bioluminescent muscle gel flashed a rippling pattern of green and purple - a request for permission.

Resonans frowned at his older son. "Nihilo is much too young to go scouting," he replied. "He hasn't developed his endoskeleton yet, Caetus. A predator would pick him off in seconds."

"I can protect him, Athair!" the adolescent protested. He cradled the shifting blob of epidermis and mesoglea that was his baby brother closer to him.

"No" is a complete sentence, Caetus," his father answered dryly. "He stays with the Minders today."

Caetus reluctantly released Nihilo, who was much too busy contemplating the consistency of rocks to notice the conversation, and let him swim back towards the pod of larvae. Caetus had a feeling that Nihilo was going to end up in trouble today, he just wasn't sure how to explain it to the adults...

(More stuff with my cute little alien guy! So that's what his species looks like at each stage of life. Mind you, it's quite generic. The number of fins, limbs, digits, and eyes can vary wildly depending on the individual and the level of pollution in the water)

Do you have a longer version of this story somewhere?

Not yet, but someday when I have time, I'll put up more of it. It's very nice to know that I'm not the only one to show any interest in it though

This scene keeps running though my head and sprouting questions.
Do some individuals of this species, or all of them, have precog abilities? Or do they simply have Sherlock level ability to read all of the chemical/light/electromagnetic signals that the water brings them? and again is it all or just some or is it something they have when young?
And are such tight family bonds normal? Are all brothers so attached or are Caetus and Nihilo special?
Questions?

Caetus is very attached to little Nihilo, but I haven't developed his character enough to know if he has any advanced predicting abilities. He does know Nihilo well enough to know that the kid is way too curious for his own good though. I think I'm aiming for Caetus to grow up to be the pod's Prefect someday, so I'll have to expand that a little.

Generally the species family units consist of two parents and two children (and families with more than two are considered very lucky indeed), and they are a fairly community-based people, so the Caloosahatchee Pod families are all very close-knit. It may be different in other Pods, as all communities are a little different, but tight family bonds are encouraged in the Caloosahatchee Pod.

Eventually I'll have time to work out more details for the short story (codenamed "Bubbles")

Awe! Big Brother just wants to take care of Little Brother!
Caetus is going to be  heartbroken (or whatever analogous organ they use) when whatever happens happens.

And probably suspicious to the point of never letting anyone he cares about leave his sight for a few weeks, poor guy.
I'm actually not sure what they would use as a heart...it's probably not too dissimilar from jellyfish.

Foxbear In reply to ArdentAspen [2014-12-13 17:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Hearts are really only necessary when the mass of a creature reaches the point where simple diffusion of gasses can no longer support their systems.
Perhaps they are like the species that have a larval stage with no major inner organs and then develop them as they get older?

ArdentAspen In reply to Foxbear [2014-12-14 01:25:25 +0000 UTC]

Probably...they can change their shape a tiny bit, like when octopi squeeze through really small spaces. So their internal organs would have to be in a spot that stays generally the same shape and size despite other endoskeleton shenanigans. It's probably some kind of transparent gel-filled sac of some kind in their center with the organs floating in it.
Although, being as they're all from another dimension and just happened to take up residence in the ocean, there's no telling what that stuff is made of.

Yes, Flare-up, you're trouble, and your brother is trouble, and Ariel is going to be trouble before long! You learned from Mama and her brothers and sisters, I'm afraid.

Ariel: (imitating Predababy's vocal patterns) "Bwah baba gwa gah-ba!"

Predababy: "Mommy! Mommy, Ariel talked! She said, "bwah baba gwa gah-ba"! Is that her first word?"

Me: "Um...no, sweetie...she didn't actually say any words. She was close though, I bet she starts talking by next month!"

Flare-up: "Hey, Ariel! Try to talk by Christmas, 'kay? You can be a Christmas baby, even though you came at not-Christmas."
(gets distracted by a giant game of Tag with the other predababies)

ArdentAspen In reply to Fanatic97 [2014-12-14 06:06:19 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I am familiar with the legend of the Black Shuck. I understand Predaclone's distaste for the character.

Well I suspect that if the fella continues to be so dead set on getting into this world, he may find that he's getting more than he bargained for. Folks around here don't take to kindly to evil supervillains invading, it seems.

(I totally understand the thing with characters breaking narrative though. Years ago I had this short adventure tale I was writing - still haven't finished - and I got halfway through a page before realizing that the way the character was acting and speaking was nowhere near how I'd planned to write him. I think it's because the part of the brain that reads and the part that writes aren't connected, so I wasn't actually reading what I was writing lol)

Yeah He's meant to embodilize THAT legend and the two *predaclone and Shuck* have come to blows More than once *Fitting as they're both mythilogical creatures*

HEr;'es the thing though he also has an army of these werid SHadowy things I killed one dnad Dragged it's bdoy back for testing..made from Dead TF souls, Vok and Dark Energon....He got em after he ripped out a Unicrons Spark and tore the body apaprt WITH HIS BARE HANDS

Reminds me for some odd reason, have you ever seen Over the Garden Wall?
Well the Shadowy things make me think of The Beast (who also makes me think of Der Erlkonig, who is an equally creepy character)

...I can never unsee that.

I clicked the link and my first reaction was literally "Gah! What the heck is...oh no...what is...whose idea was it to make a Dinobot combiner?!"

Honestly, it sounds like an idea about on par with opening Jurassic Park in Orlando, FL...meaning it can only end badly. Not to mention the overall disconcerting appearance. Yiiiikes. I didn't know that thing existed before...

It would've been cool if it turned into like a Spinosaurus Aegypticus, or something massive like a mosasaur or whatnot....the somewhat chimeric outcome of this design, however intentional it was, is a little nightmarish
