It isn't so bad where I live but it has been 20 degrees below freezing at night in some places. Time to go somewhere warm I think.

Winter Solstice soon so Spring can't be that far away.
At least I hope so. Our last winter here around would last for almost eight months. The first snow came in October and the last went away in May. What a mess!

It started in November here too. No snow at the moment in my part of the UK but there is more on the way apparently.

We had the worst weather this year here today. It rained the whole day long onto the snow. The streets became rivers and now it's all frozen and all slippery and dangerous. I'm so glad to be finally home now!

We are lucky where I live. Although it is very coldit isn't very icy underfoot. In Scotland. on their main motorway car and truck drivers have been stuck in their vehicles for 48 hours. The army was called out to clear the snow and ice. Now some places are running low on petrol. Some garages are putting up their prices!!!

Oh my! Those poor people in their cars! Imagine 48 hours in the snow!
This morning when I listened to the news, it sounded like our land was in a state of emergency. No trams, completely snow stuffed streets, closed airports, broken trees blocked some streets due to yesterday's ice rain and two of the autobahns near my town were closed, because some trucks stood across the road and couldn't get back nor forth. In front od my house one truck tried to drive up the hill and suddenly it slid very slowly backwards. It was really scary!
And of course the petrol got pretty expensive already.

I think there will be lots of protests in the new year. All the education cuts are causing lots of unrest in my country. It could lead to the downfall of the coalition (I hope)
The Christmas fair was lovely. I really enjoyed it, no alcohol (I'm pregnant) but it was a lovely weekend. Sadly I'm too big at the moment to fit into my medieval dress, next time I will.
My camera is in the shop being fixed, hopefully in time for Christmas.
It rained a lot here yesterday, too. I hope it will be dry today, I'm going shopping to get the rest of the Christmas things.

We are getting more snow today apparently. The schools here close tomorrow for 3 weeks, so that should be OK.
Yes,my daughter is eagerley awaiting the birth of her brother. He is due on 22nd January, I hope he is not late.
When we go to New Zealand we always fly Royal Brunei, they are a very good airline, brilliant with children. Kiri first flew at age 10 months, Jack will be 3 months, not sure how that will go. We had planned for Jack to be born in NZ, January and February are summer there and it would have been a nice start for him, however my mother wanted him born here and she got her way.
What is your son's name? I just hope Jack holds on until after Christmas, I don't want to miss out on all the celebrations.
Yes, I am pleased I am getting my camera back, now I can take some more New Zealand photos.Thank you, I'm glad you like my photos. I like yours too.

We had a substanial snowfall late afternoon / early evening yesterday. Why is it that the rest of northern Europe cope with snow all winter but UK is immobilised by a little snow?
Yes, the children here have about 3 weeks. Yours only get 1 week? Poor things.
We will probably stay in New Zealand for 2 months.Greg (my husband) wants me to give up teaching and be a stay at home mum but I'm not so sure I could do this We will have to see.
Friedrich is a nice name, the boy next door to us is called Freddy.
Yes New Zealand is very beautiful, snow capped mountains, volcanos, enormous lakes with clear blue water....we have visited Hobbiton, very pretty. J R R Tolkien set Hobbiton in a place called Sarehole in Birmingham but I think if he had ever visited New Zealand he would have set it there

Why is it that the rest of northern Europe cope with snow all winter but UK is immobilised by a little snow?
Because the UK is just not used in so much snow? At least that's what I imagine. Scandinavian countries have to deal with it every single winter, but they are also allowed to use other tools, like tyres with spikes, to move their cars properly on the snow covered roads.
We had gladly a weekend without new snow, but at the moment it snows again.
Do the kids in your country get more winter holidays in February? Because ours will have another two free weeks then.
So when you will stay in NZ for two months, little Jack will still have half of a summer at home. I think that's nice. And by then he'll already be old enough cope with the difference in temperature properly. He'll be happy!
Well I'm not sure how you think about staying at home with the kids, but it was absolutely no option for me. I know I would go mad. No matter how much I'd be engaged in several activities for the children, parents, church ... whatever one can do. I know, I couldn't live without my work.
What did you teach?
Oh, that's so beautiful! When have you visited Hobbiton? I always saw the photos when it was all empty and sheep would pasture the green hills. Then the doors and windows of the empty smials stared into the world like blind, hollow eyes which had seen better times, years ago, when the place was inhabited by happy little creatures and the laughter of hobbit children would sound through the hills. It made me so sad to see these pictures and I thought I would never ever go there, no matter if I had a hotel right behind the hills.
And now look at the latest photos. It's all rebuilt and it looks like the shire folk had come out of the woods and back to the place again. As if they'd never ceased. *happy sigh*

Tyres with spikes? That sounds like a good idea.We had a light snow fall last night but not too bad. Ah, it is snowing again.
Yes, the children have a week in February for half term.
I'm torn between my job, which I love, and my children. As I told you, apart from little Jack, we have a 3 year old daughter. My mother says there should not be any difficulty in deciding what to do, I should be a stay at home mum. However, the school where I teach is extremely good about teachers who also happen to be mothers. I work in a private school and my maternity leave is much bettter than if I worked in a state school. I'm not due back at work until September 2011, so as you can see, I don't have to decide for some time yet. I teach history to 8-10 year old girls.
We visited Hobbiton in December 2009, alas, it was empty then and I don't know that we will be able to visit when we are in New Zealand this time. They begin shooting 'The Hobbit' next year, I'm not sure exactly when. Apparently all structures will be permanent this time. There are no hotels behind the hills, sadly. You would have to stay at a hotel in Matamata.
Greg's family live in Wellington, on the north island. If we do go to Hobbiton, it would entail a 3 hour journey by sea and then a day or so by road. However, I shouldn't think there will be any tours or visits allowed while we are in NZ because of filming.

So today the snow would melt almost completely away and tomorrow we will get some new, just to celebrate a white Christmas.
I can see that you must be pretty torn in two, between home and profession. And see how different the opinions happen to be in our two countries! Your mother sees it as self-evident, that you will stay at home now with the kids and here, especially in my part of Germany, there is no question what to do either, but it's assumed that one will go to work as before.
When Fritz was a baby, I always admired the women who lead their own business besides their family with little children. They took the kids with them to work and had somehow still the time to care for both at the same time. But then, when I looked around after a while, most of them had given up their business and only a few of them worked in another job. It no easy, doubtlessly, but it's possible.
So, I'm sure you will find the right way for yourself. Just go with your gut and it will work out!
Yes, I know they'll be shooting 'The Hobbit' soon. So there will finally be life again between the hills. No matter if there is a hotel behind Hobbiton or not, even if one of the big eagles would drop me there I wouldn't want to visit this empty ghost town. I just wonder if they couldn't make a museum out of the place after they'd finished shooting the films one day.
Well, that's of course a pretty long journey from Wellington to Hobbiton. I think if I was you, I wouldn't take this trip either, especially with two little children!
Dear, I wish you a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones! I hope you will get everything you wish for and that you will also have the time to relax.

Actually it doesn't snow a lot in the shire, so that may be the reason.
