I have a theory about that. Naruto is actually a folktale told centuries after it occurred. It's why the girls act more like cardboard cutouts and why the boys can perform such ridiculous feats; because it's been passed down from parent to child for so long that certain aspects are exaggerated.

Haku is actually stated as neither girl nor boy in the novels with Haku in it. I think he's a boy, because he hasn't got any obvious female features. And I don't mean his facial features. Haku looks like a girl when he/she is younger. He/she is soooo cute. GREAT POSTER!
