whoops my hand slipped and I ended up coming up with a human pirate AU xDa brief rundown: SpongeBob and Squidward work for Captain Krabs on his trusty ship, the Krusty Krab (obviously). They sail the ocean in search for new islands to explore and new people to share their Krabby Patties with, and also try to hunt for treasure in the meantime!
Patrick joins the crew as a stowaway, but doesn't have a whole lot to offer when it comes to performing helpful duties on board the ship. He tries tho, so we'll give him some credit for that ;u;
Sandy was the hardest to figure out. I ended up going with a mermaid, since in the actual show she's already sort of a "fish out of water" - what with her being the only land mammal in the entire ocean. So in this case, she's the opposite: a sea creature who is studying the lives of humans above the surface! Plus, mermaids and pirates kinda go hand-in-hand. C:
side note: Plankton is also involved in the AU but I haven't fully visualized how I want to draw him yet. However, I imagine that he'd probably have a fully automated submarine that he uses to stalk the Krusty Krab, haha. Obviously Karen would be the one running and powering the sub xD
anyway! This was just a random idea that has been formulating in my brain for the past few days, and I had to draw it! I have a few concepts for some scenarios these dorks get into, but I'm not sure if I'll draw that out, as well.

You did a great job making the characters instantly recognizable in humanoid form! Sandy as a mermaid is a creative move and it makes perfect sense considering her position in the cartoon. I think my favorite design is Patrick’s, definitely, though I wonder if you were subconsciously inspired by Smee’s getup in Peter Pan...

omg!!! you're the first one to notice the inspiration I drew from Smee!! For Patrick in particular, his design is also very much inspired by the Captain from WALL-E, too! ;w; I'm not used to drawing chunky characters, so it's been fun to see how I could pull it off.
Sandy took me a little while to figure out at first! I remember the idea of "mermaid" popped in my head but I wasn't sure if I could make it work. But once I played with the idea a bit, it all clicked together and I feel like it was a good choice for her ;0;

Mr. Krabs looks amazing! Wish it was in higher quality though... maybe it’s just mobile, but the picture quality is very poor

That looks great. I especially like the little details like Sandy's little flower and those holes on Spongebob clothes (mabey I'm readying to much in to it). Just a question, Mr. Krabs human form is it from the movie?

thank you so much! and yes - all of those details were 100% intentional! a friend had suggested the holes in SpongeBob's outfit to represent the actual holes that SpongeBob has, and I absolutely had to add Sandy's flower as part of her design! ;w;
About Mr. Krabs tho - his design is completely my own interpretation! There are a few things I'd still want to fix for when I eventually draw him again, but that's basically how I imagined he would look as a human! C:

kgjhdfg i really gotta fine-tune this idea tbh ;0; I feel like it's such a fun concept to work with, and a lot of various scenarios from the show can still translate seamlessly into the AU!!
still not quite sure how I'll go about sharing some of these scenarios that I have in mind tho.... a comic would be too stressful, and I also don't really think that adding "spongebob fanfiction" to my writing resume would be something to take pride in lol

Okay this is an amazing AU idea for SpongeBob! I love the hole "Pirate Crew" theme going on, and with Sandy as a mermaid (but then SpongeBob would need to wear a scuba suit to go visit her.
Wonder if she'll find a "dinglehopper" and brush her hair with it (since she's now a mermaid fascinated with studying humans). XD Otherwise, amazing work! Hopefully Nick takes notice of this. Would love to see your Plankton in a submarine soon!

actually! I'm considering possibly having Sandy build herself some kind of suit to spend time on land with the crew! I just haven't totally figured out how I'd work that out yet xD I can imagine she can still survive above water, just as long as part of her is submerged (being in a water-filled tub is probably their first alternative when they bring her aboard, for instance haha)
but yeah! I'm still trying to figure out how I'll draw Plankton - I have a vague idea but it's not quite clear to me at the moment, lol.

I actually did not know that! Of course I've only recently started watching the show, so I'm still new to a lot of things that long-time watchers have known for years xD
maybe if I draw more for this AU, I'll edit Squidward's appearance a bit to make him closer to how old he'd actually be! I'm putting SpongeBob at around 14-ish in this AU (around the age he supposedly was in the first season), so it'd be only fair to make sure Squiddy here is as accurate as possible as well!
