Not sure why the jpeg compression is so apparent...     I believe it is due to the heavy grain look I implemented.

*** UPDATE**  The DA compression artifacting looks to have been resolved

Featuring the first object I ever made in Blender.  A mug.  lol

Nice work.

Have you considered converting them to JPEGs and compressing them yourself? While it's still not as good as a PNG, it appears to come out a little better than uploading a raw PNG and letting dA handle the compression, at least in my experience.

Thanks!

Yes, I did try that after my initial upload.  I had the same train of thought.  I created a new JPEG upload as a test, but unfortunately it looked exactly the same after uploading.

I think the compression visibility varies depending on the content and contrast and such

I think you may be right. Something I just posted had quite a bit of compression, so much so that I could see it even without my glasses. So I popped them on and went through a random selection of other posts of mine and saw that it's apparent in all of them, I just couldn't see it without my glasses, since I don't normally wear them.

Anyway, it does seem to have a greater effect on things that are either naturally grainy or that have had grain applied to them.

Yes.  After some more tests, it is far less visible on brighter images with minimal grain.  I only just recently noticed it on PNG uploads, so I wasn't sure if something changed.

I get it though, they get a bazillion uploads

You are far from the only one being unhappy with the compression method used by DA. At one hand it may seem weird for an Art Community Provider. At the other hand, with the millions of artworks on the servers and hundreds added a day, you can imagine that disk space quickly runs out if they used .PNG.

There are some modern day compression algorithms available with better compression and far less distortion but of course, Apple, Google and Microsoft all have their own version only supporting their own browser. So once again, these guys are of zero help. Maybe one day...

Nice work! I like the atmosphere.

Thank you

Yes, I can only imagine how much space all the images gobble up.  One uncompressed PNG can be 18mb.  Hopefully they find a middle-ground or work out some wizardry
