Description This little portrait was painted from the February 2003 Marie Claire magazine cover. However, I painted her dress mauve instead of white. After scanning the painting in recently, I decided to play around with Photoshop’s gradient map tool and manipulated the brightness of the dress to make it look black as shown here.

6 x 8 ¼ inches (152.4 x 209.55mm)

Materials:
Scepter Gold Winsor & Newton Watercolor Brushes
Iwata HP-B and CM-B Airbrushes
Winsor & Newton Artist Watercolors (not recommended, unless you enjoy super-staining watercolor you can’t correct or lift. I paint with only Holbein watercolors now)
Old Holland Watercolors (opposite problem of W&N watercolors, lifts too easily)
Winsor & Newton Blending Medium
Smooth 2ply ragboard
Photoshop 7: magic lasso, gradient mapping, brightness/contrast adjustment and color correction

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look! Have an inspiring day and night

That is a awesome outfit that she's wearing. Her blondish hair is so pretty from the way how you painted her.

Thank you very much!

Color is my passion and I strive to not just copy what I see, but to express my emotions through color. Understanding color temperature and which pigments are warm and cool are essential in color mixing in watercolor. Unbalanced use in mixing cools and warms will result in muddy colors, something that I strive to overcome in each painting. I love vibrant high chroma in my colors, so I plan my color mixing very carefully. Its really not that hard, only takes a bit of preparation and homework.

Have an inspiring day and night!

Thank you I wish I could take all the credit, but my Iwata CM-B airbrush was a very good boy on rendering those soft tones

Yes, but YOU "tell" the airbrush what to do!

Looks so good and realistic. The way you do hair is so impressive. The dress looks so much like you would have used charcoal. Anyway, just beautiful

Thank you!!! Praise coming from such a great artist as yourself is simply heaven! Hair and hair styles are my favorite things to paint on a woman, perhaps because I myself am so bald!

She is so recognizable and everything is perfect in this one: I love how you do the skin, it looks so fresh and soft!

Thank you! At the time I was breaking in my new Iwata CM-B airbrush, which can render super light spays that gave me a soft look. But I think somehow, I made her a little older than what she looked like in the photograph. This little portrait, as I mentioned in my comments was a turning point on how I render color: how to use temperature to render values. Using cool pigments to sculpt warm tones (or vise versa) with out turning my colors into a muddy gray. All of my early paintings, my flesh tones look like mud!

Thanks for the fav

Have an inspiring day and night!

I've just been really fortunate to have studied at a great atelier, Watts Atelier of the Arts [link] and more importatly studied figure drawing under master artist/illustrators Ron Lemen [link] and his wife [link] both of whom are now teaching at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art [link]
