Benson is a great boss, I think he thinks of Mordecai,Rigby and the others as friends, however he HAS TO BE professional when it comes to work. Again, he's a great boss and I get annoyed when some say he's a jerk to Mordecai and Rigby. M and R may be my favorite characters (together with Eileen), but I fully understand M and R are being slackers, and Benson only wants to push them to do better. (He even said that himself in 'Busted Cart'.
