It was 3 a.m. and we'd just finished a handline up the upper reach of the hollow and tied into the dozer line. It was cold after the fire moved up the hill and so late that the volunteer crews had given up and gone home. None of the crew up at the head of Owl Hollow had been fed, though the folks nearer the main road had been given hoagies and soup. Soup would have been welcome, but at least I always carry snacks in my fire pack. )
