Description Today we have a Japanese Type-90 MBT, inspired by Tamiya's model kit!

The Type 90 may very well be one of the most overlooked tanks today. It all started back in 1975 with the the type 74. The 74 was pretty on par with the M60 Patton and tanks similar to it, but just 5 years later the type 74 was already outdated, with other countries already working on projects for the near future(The Merkava 1 and Abrams are good examples).

Japanese High Command wanted the JGSDF to have an up to date, reliable machine made domestically that could defeat the tanks fielded by the USSR and China. Mitsubishi,NEC,Japan Steel works, Fujitsu and Daikin industries collaborated to make the first prototype in 1980. At 50 tonnes, it could move well up to 70 km an hour with every part being domestic except the main armament, the 120 mm Smoothboore, or Rheinmetall RH-120 from West Germany. If this sounds familiar, it's because this same gun was mounted on the M1A1, K1A1,C1 Ariete, and Leopard 2(Why reinvent the wheel, right?).

341 were built between 1990 and 2009, so what's the deal with this thing? Well it already had strikes against it. It was deemed inadequate for urban operations, and with the Type 10 project gaining more popularity the Type 90's spotlight was dwarfed in a country that already exported virtually no weapons. like most weapons of the JGSDF it never saw any combat, though it has been overseas for life fire exercises in the US. I originally thought of adding a flag, but felt it was better to let the green and brown tones speak for themselves.

Do you guys like these more detailed and realistically proportioned drawings more than the old ones?

And have a look at the lineart! its on instagram.

Very good piece of art,but i feel like i have to make a small correction in the description: the Ariete yes it use a 120mm gun, but from OTO Melara, an italian company

Can you add to your list of "Tanks to draw" the M8 Thunderbolt? It was intended to replace the Sheridan, but got cancelled and succeeded by the Stryker.

The problem with Type-90 is mostly it was too heavy for most of Japan mountainous terrain, one thing that IIRC restrict its deployment in Hokkaido.

But maybe one day, a Kaijuu will appear and Type-90 can show it worth

Oh I remember those kits. Back in the day (1970) I got a kit of the German Tiger. It was big I think a 1 to 10 ratio. Highly detailed using metal parts like tow cables and tools. The track was individual pieces you linked to make the full track. The turret was fully detailed with seats and controls. The track wheels were spring loaded to move. Plus she was motorized using separate motors for the drive sprockets.
It was one of my favs along with a P40.
I use to build dioramas. I learned how to use a wood burner tool and a dremel drill to simulate battle damages.
Won a few ribbons back at the old hobby shop when they would hold a model building show.
Fun days!

Realistic or stylistic? Sorry but I'm 50/50, can't decide, I do like the added comedic bits now and again.
Nasty looking penetrator ammo. JM33  Although it looks in the drawing as if they're loading samurai sword projectiles.

Maybe the best choice, is to do both!

You do these so well! I like how your outlines are colored. They're not black but a light tanish color. Really well done!

Thanks, I try to keep the lineart from jumping too much out from the coloring!

Looking at the poses of the crew, the words 'Hey, that's gotta be based on the Tamiya kit' popped into my mind even before I read your description! XD
