Description  This was posted a few days earlier, I'm just now getting it on DA. A lot of people think the Saint Chamond was the first French Heavy tank of WW1, and while its widespread use would make you think that, it is actually the second. Initially some officers were enraged with the Schneider tank project not including their input, feeling that the army's real needs and requirements were thrown out of the window. Back Then a lot of people thought the tank wasn't what it should have been, and today many call it "underpowered". While this may be true to a certain extent, it was still one of the most innovative tanks of its time. It was Armed with a 75mm gun, and with 4 machine guns. The Armored playing was designed to withstand typical small arms fire and with this it was one of the heaviest armored allied tanks with 19 mm of armor. And as the fighting left the trenches tanks in general became more effective anyway. What do you guys think? Was going with the Saint-Chamond a good idea? Or was mass producing the earlier Schneider CA the better option?

You need to add the other French disaster to your list of WW 1 armor:  the Schneider.  It was a little better than the Saint-Chamond (note I said 'a little better') in that it was smaller and a bit more maneuverable, but it had its 75 mm cannon offset to the right side of the bow.

There was one campaign where the Schneider's were sent into combat with spare gas cans lashed to the back ends of the tracks.  German machine guns riddled those cans, and the gas sloshed down into the engine compartments, setting the vehicles on fire!  The Germans turned sick at the screaming of the French tankers being burned alive in their vehicles as they continued to roll along before either the engines gave out, or the ammo cooked off!

An innovative design, it had an engine-driven generator driving an electric motor per track.  But its one flaw was that the tracks were too short for the hull (Sometimes called 'an elephant on gazelle legs'), such that when the tracks sank into the mud, the driver would work the rheostat controls back and forth to the point were they burned out the electrical system.

This is awesome! The expression are hilarious. The contrast between the tank crew and their officer is perfect. I really like the German screaming through the phone.

I feel like a lot of the early tanks were, for lack of a better term, "land battleships": big, heavy, and designed to punch through the enemy line with their sheer firepower. It really took the Renault FT to streamline the design and create the modern tank.

Still, can't deny they were effective (or at the very least they left quite the impression).

I just realized, it's November 11 or at least near November 11.
The day of the the armistice that ended World War 1. And 2018 is the 100th year anniversary of the armistice.

Well, if it's an early variant, that grenade will get stuck on the roof and the tank will go KAPUTT

This crew is on a roll!😋

While being a well armed tank it had some serious issues. Trenches, large shell holes were its worse enemy. (Aside from being under powered)
It had a terrible front overhang which could make it nose dive and become stuck.
The Brit Mark 1 did better at trench and shell hole crossing but was plagued with mechanical issues The mechanical issues were addressed but the war ended the need for Landships. The Mark 1 had iron plates instead armor steel. The iron plates splayed the crew with metal shards when bullets struck the metal plates.
The one true future tank to emerge was the pint size Renault FT. While lightly gunned it was fast and reliable. Made of steel which was thin but stronger than iron. It left the Germans with the idea of swarming your enemy with tanks. Blitzkrieg.
The oddest of the tanks was the Russian Tsar.
Huge wheels were thought to be the best idea at crossing trenches and defeating barbed wire. The high gun cabin gave the crew great visibility and firing lanes. It never made it to the field. It got stuck on tests and the Revolution ended Russia involvement in WWI.
The only tank on tank battle was between three German A7V and three Brit Mark IV at Villers.-Brettoneux The Brits won with their male tank.
Yes......the Brits had female and male tanks.😁
Females were those only armed with machine guns. The males were those with six pounder cannons protruding from them.
Hence the male female idea.😋

Awesome work! Personally, I very much like the Schneider CA1. It also served with the Spanish Foreign Legion in the Rif War and with the Republican militias at the start of the Spanish Civil War.
