Description Troops from 1st Bn The Fusiliers on a foot patrol on Leaf Island north of Basrah. The advent of cheap GPS recievers and improved aerial photography has rendered traditional mapping largely redundant in modern warfare...
A map grid is overlaid on an aerial photograph (usually taken within 24 hours of the patrol deploying) of the area to be patrolled.

al-Basrah, Iraq. 2008

All soldiers all over the world look the same, do they?

Really like this
I love the sharpness on the soldier in the foreground, it really portrays the depth of the photo. Woohoo for GPS!

Makes Officers look good at long last...instead of the usual "errr Sergeant, where are we?"

Thats awesome, so it's almost like you have a video game minimap.

Too bad you can't get real-time photographs, and enemies could be marked in red (because i'm sure you can tell from a photo who's an enemy right?).

cool shot. when you say the map overlaid, is that digital, or do you have to physically hold the new image over the gps?

The air photos have a grid printed onto them with the map co-ordinates so that the Military Grid Refence System (MGRS) can be used instead of Lat-Long...means that we can go from Maps to air-phots to GPS and it's all the same...

Just a (somewhat unrelated, but...) question I wanted to ask... What do you think of SA-80s?

The A-2 variant that we now use is superb. Redesigned and manufactured by Heckler & Koch, it's fine in evry theatre I've worked in: desert (Iraq and Afghanistan), jungle (Malawi and Brunei) and Arctic (Norway).

'cause the description I got off ArRSe was of a thing that didn't QUITE like being put anywhere near dust or extreme temperatures... But I guess that was the older variant, H&K do know how to make good firearms...
