Description Just a reminder of where I stand,
really its very simple. I don't know why people have such a hard time with this concept.

I want this to be a message to any artist that feels put down for what they do, it dosnt matter your skill level, or your fandom, there is no such thing as perfection. this keeps many good artist hands tied...they feel afraid of being bashed and so their creativity dies.

Just draw, have fun!
Please print this out..re-blog it...whatever to encourage yourself and others!

I just wanted to say I saw this and felt really happy, yesterday I was hating myself for not being good enough and it just sucks to think that no matter what I did no one would care about my art and being ignored is not easy, but this message really cheered me up and you are right, it doesnt matter as long as I love what I do and have fun doing it.
Thank you stranger! I really needed this.Β

On the other hand, there are a lot of us out here who offer honest advice that isn't worded at all to put anyone down or tear them apart.Β  Is this billboard meant to shield the artist from hearing things that may help them get even better?

The fact that perfection is an unattainable ideal doesn't mean that striving to be closer to it is some kind of drudgery that sucks the life and enjoyment out of drawing.Β  Far from it, my experience since I have taken up the mantle of self-improvement is that I enjoy drawing more now than ever.Β Β

Contrary to the sentiment in the billboard, creativity dies when artists naval-gaze and stop exploring.Β  Curiosity as to what else is possible and the desire to achieve it is the lifeblood of creativity.

Yes, it amazed me that even this simple little billboard got bashed for speaking the truth of many artist, there comes a point where you have to not care what people say and do your own thing. the thing that makes you happy and let the progress come at its own pace.

I honestly think some people are getting the wrong idea behind this. I don't think it means "I don't want to try drawing anything else and that's that" but I think it addresses when others say stuff like "why do you draw this person all the time?" or "you draw wolves every single time, just draw something else". Eventually artist will begin to try other things, but forcing them to do it is wrong. You should never force or guilt trip an artist into drawing anything, because the artist should walk on their own two legs and find their own way. Even though I mostly draw animals I do want to be better at drawing anime and buildings and so on, and I'm slowly working on that.

I didn't mean this to be that long, but hopefully people understand my point

Absolutely and wholeheartedly agree with you.

You can receive hundreds of critiques, but at the end of the day, you get to decide what to do, and nobody has a right to interfere or meddle with your personal decisions regarding your art. Plus, you're not here to please everybody.

THANK YOU!!! this is exactly what I was trying to say and it is exactly what I mean, as an artist many people are going to try and push and pull and sway you about what you should do or shouldn't.....Yes art is a constantly learning, even if you are drawing things you like....the point is that you need to go at your own pace and enjoy the journey...stress and feeling pressured is stifling and can turn a joy into a drudgery....my proffesional work is drawing and while it can be fun many times it's not because I am having to draw things for others...I have to take breaks and draw the things I like and want....and I feel myself refreshed!

Thank you so much for seeing the pure and simple message here!

sorry,Β  can`t think that way

for me this phrase has many diffrent meanings in the way, depents on what word you emphasis.Β  I donΒ΄t like this positive thinking terror, when i start drawing 90 % is just rubish , but its part of the prosses of creativety , to do lots of things that donΒ΄t fit.
Β If the meanig is more on the , I . so, that do i only draw things that in like , no for sure not .
When the meaning is there is no one , that have to tell me what to draw, damn that would be a privileg, but it ends at the point where you have to earn some money to live.

nekovi-chan [2014-08-28 04:32:40 +0000 UTC]

I partially agree with this, I think that it has a positive message. But, some artists I've seen use this as an excuse to not improve, with the "it's just my style," sort of things. In some cases, it is the person's style, in other cases it's all the person knows how to draw.

rosadaestra In reply to nekovi-chan [2014-09-02 05:59:10 +0000 UTC]

The most important thing is that the artist is happy--not what anyone else thinks. If you want something realistic, go take a picture is what I say.

You're assumption is that those things are universally offensive. I'm no proponent of what you described, but freedom of speech is a two way street. If it wasn't then it wouldn't truly be free.

rosadaestra In reply to Sciphan [2014-09-02 06:00:39 +0000 UTC]

I know this is an old comment, but freedom of speech doesn't cover hate crime / hate speech.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sciphan In reply to rosadaestra [2014-09-02 06:25:19 +0000 UTC]

"Only speech that poses an imminent danger of unlawful action, where the speaker has the intention to incite such action and there is the likelihood that this will be the consequence of his or her speech, may be restricted and punished by that law." Hate speech needs to constitute an immediate and eminent threat to be considered as such, which is really not what is being talked about here. And art as hate crime? Totally left field.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rosadaestra In reply to Sciphan [2014-09-02 17:59:57 +0000 UTC]

KKK and neo-nazis have the intention and in general post threat to people of the target groups, so your point? This is not even related to the art, I just don't get where you're coming from.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sciphan In reply to rosadaestra [2014-09-02 19:21:55 +0000 UTC]

It has to be eminent danger for it to be classified as hate speech. The point is that you are and should be free to produce whatever subject matter you want. I don't believe in partial freedom where art is concerned and the only way that is not protected is if there is the pretext of immediate harm. So long as just one person is willing to look at something as art, that content is art no matter how much you or the pubic at large disagree with it. If you weren't commenting on the subject in the context of freedom of subject matter, then why did you comment at all? I think there's probably a lot of things you just don't get.
