Description This is actually my second experiment with Charcoals.  I didn't upload the first one here.  If you want to see it, here it is www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi…  This is just using General's charcoal pencils soft and extra soft.  I did get vine charcoal recently and am excited to start using them soon.  I still don't really know what I'm doing with these though..Am I doing it right? XD

This took between 30 and 40 minutes, I believe.  I used this to also experiment with altering my style a bit.  Krypton's snout and neck are thinner, and his eye was supposed to be until I began layering the blending around his eye, which made it bigger looking. XD But yeah.  Hope you like.

Krypton and art (c) me.  Nu stealing.

It's not bad. But maybe add less shading around the eye next time. It...kind of looks like he got a black eye. Also, his horns are super thin. Not sure if that was intentional or not. Aside from those two things, this looks good!

Thankeh.  And yeahhhh.  I screwed that up bad. XD And yeah, they are quite thin. I don't remember though if that's what I was going for..

Charcoal is fun because you can do whatever the hell you want with it and it'll still look good.

God I'm really tempted to get all of my charcoal out. They're so much fun. C:

How many do you have?

Veanil In reply to Arlunwyr [2014-08-17 15:35:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. They're like graphite, just messier.

I have several hundred pieces of them, mostly willow charcoal.

Ohhh okay.

A friend told me to get Vine.  Haven't played with it.  Too busy with Linux.

Willow's a little bit lighter and you don't have to press down as hard with it, which can help a lot if you just want to feel loose and doodle shit. x'D

Vine's good for more detailed work.

You're welcome!

LOK okay. before I do, what kind of style were you going for? sketchy or more on the realistic side. AND, what kinds of things did you want critique on? just the charcoal part or other things as well?

Arlunwyr In reply to Ealaain [2014-08-19 01:00:11 +0000 UTC]

I was more or less going for something realistic.  Other things as well, as in the whole drawing? XD sure.

Ealaain In reply to Arlunwyr [2014-08-22 21:39:32 +0000 UTC]

ooohhh okay. this is good to know XD

well, since you're going for realism, the first thing would have to be the very visible outlines. Try to blend those into the shading around them. it's very rare that an outline that stark will happen in real life.
Also, be careful when doing the shading, especially around the rounded areas. His jaw looks a little flat, really because the curve of the jaw wasn't followed when the shading was done. one last thing about the shading; don't be afraid of even darker contrast. It'll help to make things look more realistic.

you already mentioned the eye, so I won't bother with that since you're aware of it. although, the line above his eye, is that an eyelid, or a brow ridge? I'm a little confused what that is.
the jaw seems a little too far  forward and small. bringing it back and closer to the ear will help with the anatomy. as of now, it almost looks as if Krypton's ear is connected to his neck. the ears of pretty much every creature are near where the jaw connects. Now, don't connect ON the jaw, but just behind/above/ general area. his horns are also just a wee bit to thin all the way down. antlers and horns are generally thicker at the base (and if you think about it, it holds true to trees as well. so think of it as kind of an anchoring device of sorts). also, knowing the placement of everything with both the bone structure and musculature will help you when shading and knowing where things should be dark, and where light.

as for the charcoal. I do know that charcoal pencils are generally harder than vine, and are a bit harder to blend. treat them kind of like graphite or colored pencils. keep the strokes closer together to help with the blending, otherwise, a lot of streaking is going to happen. OH, and if you blend with your finger, be sure it's completely dry, otherwise you're going to be picking up all the charcoal with your finger, and sometimes it makes it harder to erase >_>
anyhow, hope this made a bit of sense LOL. if you have any questions, just ask!
