Description This post is for the Daz Studio addicts.

I'll admit one of my minor obsessions is that I just can't let the old vendor models die. Don't get me wrong, I still spend WAY too much money on new vendor content.  Even so, I still find myself returning to old vendor models to see what new life I can breathe into them... for instance, using new Iray materials.

One of the biggest problems I have with older clothing models is that they just don't compare in terms of realism, and often realistic and conforming clothing folds are a big part of the problem.  So happily for us they *finally* updated the dynamic clothing engine to dForce with the last release (yay!). But of course the disclaimer stands that older models might not have the proper geometry to play nicely in the pool (boo!).

So this leaves me at the frustrating point where I feel like I have to try out my various old models and see what happens.  To make matters worse, here's an example of my early attempts with an old V4 clothing hood applied to G3F.  At first, dForce didn't seem to work at all (see the third panel).  But my bulldog has taught me the power of persistence, and with some almost-random changes (I'm making educated guesses) to the different individual material simulation settings, etc.  I was able to achieve the final result after about 20 minutes of experimentation.

So will it all be worth it to spend the time trying to revive old models?  I don't know. All I can say is I'm pretty sure I'm going to be wasting a lot more time in the near future experimenting instead of rendering. That's how we all learn, I guess...

Renderosity Product:
www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/th…

Steps to reproduce in DazStudio 4.10:
1. Load *and pose* G3F; you really need to pose G3F before you start a dForce simulation
2. Load the "Caperucita" hood
3. Select the hood model in the Scene tab, then add a dForce modifier to the hood model via the menus... "Edit->Object->Geometry->Add dForce Modifier: Dynamic Geometry"
4. Go the "Simulation Settings" tab (make it visible if you don't see it, use Window->Panes->Simulation Settings):

Note I have "start bones from memorized pose" set to "off" in this example, since my pose was pretty similar to the default pose and didn't really need that (it just slows things down).  For more dynamic poses, however, you might need to set this to true.

5. Make sure the hood is selected, and in the "Surfaces" tab (make it visible if you don't see it, use Window->Panes->Simulation Settings) select the bow material.  Set the "Simulation" settings as follows to dampen the simulation effect on the bow:

6. Make sure the hood is selected, and in the "Surfaces" tab (make it visible if you don't see it, use Window->Panes->Simulation Settings) select the fabric, fabric-inner, and trim materials. For each of the 3 materials, set the "Simulation" settings as follows:

  7. Start the simulation from the "Simulation Settings" tab and go get a drink while it does its thing.

That's what worked for me... hope someone finds this useful.

But how does it handle a hood with hair? Hoods and hair always give me problems even before deforce.

Thank you for this tut brother, however, I am stumped very early on this one.....I select my 'model' in the Scene tab and browse to Edit > Object > Geometry > .....but I do not have "Add dForce Modifier: Dynamic Geometry" in the selected drop down.....

Any suggestions or tips....Am I missing something? I am using a newer model but in theory the process should be the same.....shouldn't it?

Yes it should be the same.  Have you upgraded to DazStudio 4.10?  The dForce stuff is brand new.

If you ARE running DS 4.10... then perhaps it could also be that you have selected one of the pre-canned "simple" UIs at install time?
The simpler UI options hide a lot.  The options to select from among the pre-canned UIs are found under Window->Style->Select Style...

If you want to go for your own customized UI setup, take a look at: Window->Workspace->Customize
There is a 'Menus' tab on the right panel, click it then expand the main menu:

You can use this to move items around in the menu system... there should be a whole bunch of dForce options on the left panel.

I'll be damned if I can find "Add dForce Modifier: Dynamic Geometry" in the options panel.....

I am running current version of Studio 4.10.0.123 and do us an 'out of the box' UI's but have modified it to my liking. I have looked through the left panel and am unable to locate any options for adding a dFroce modifier.
I am quite sure you are directing me correctly but I am not having much luck finding what I need. LOL....grrr.

Huh, in the Customization dialog screen shot (above) it shows a dForce item in the left panel.... expand that's abd it's where I find the "add modifier" options.
Weird for sure that dForce seems completely missing for you!

I have modifiers for dForce...just nothing for Add dForce Modifier: Dynamic Geometry. I have every other modifier just not one to modify the geometry.

A million times thank you! I’ve been trying to learn and use D-Force but it’s been such a pain (plus my computer isn’t up to handling it). This helps a lot.

Nice work on the customized d-force, there is a lot to be gained, but it takes a ton of time to find settings where the older stuff doesn't explode (and crash the system), and there is that dress of hers which would leave her naked in a moment if you tried to use dforce on it
