I saw a painting (picture?) like this at Saint-Riquier (Picardie) not so long ago . There was an exposition about his grandson Nithard (father of the french language, he convinces Charles le Chauve and Louis the German to say the Oaths of Strasbourg in roman & tudesc).

I always wonder why Charlemagne is always depict with a long beard. Frankish peoples had just mustache at this time, didn't they ?

Yes he surely looked different, it was an idealisation of the 15th century,
which is wrong. But still the pic looks cool^^

查理曼。
That is a Chinese translation about this great emperor.
I read a book and it says that he was 1.85 meters high.

Still, as an East-Asian person, I'm quite confused that why the Ger and Fra share the same emperor?
and what is the exact difference between them?

It´s a bit difficult let me explain.

When the Roman Empire did end, germanic tribes controlled half of Europe,
but sometimes only as elite, like in France, where the germanic Franken ruled
over gallo-romans. Karl was a German who was a descendant of the Franken,
and he ruled over France, Germany and Italy. It was a multi-ethnic Reich.

Ok, danke für dein explaination.
It seems that the name France means Franken ,and Franken is actually something German?!

How weird is that. The name of "France" means they are under the control of German?

Actually yes, their country has a german name, because 1600 or 1500 years ago
one german tribe conquered them^^ But the Germans did not force the French
to learn their germanic language, instead the german Franken learned
the latin language of them.

Aha, it reminds me of a novel called “Die letzte Lektion”——Daudet.
Some Chinese thinks, if the European people invented a kind of Sympol-like word system, maybe the whole Europe will always like a unity.
Anyway, the alphabets can be changed easily when there is dialects.

That makes the chinese unity, you can read the same all over your nation,
even when you pronounce it different. But you forget something.

The Europeans are not one ethnic or Volk, like China. We are all different,
split in 4 major groups:

Nordic Germanics, Western Celtics, Southern Romanics and Eastern Slavics (+ some smaller ones).
We also look different. For example Germanics have a long head form,
Slavics have a round head form, Nordics have blonde/ brown hair and blue eyes,
Romanics have black hair and brown eyes.

We´re not the same, just close related.

Of course also Chinese look different, I saw it myself. The Han-Chinese from the North
have a more fair skin, while South-Chinese have more brown skin.

I´d say the difference between Europeans, is like your difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Thailander.

Some of the Japanese came from China, just like some of the English were from German.
And also the creature's properties are designed by both the DNA and the enviroment, the Southern Han Chinese and Norden Han Chinese are quite different.
Those Han Chinese who lives in a Highland in the westernpart of China finally become Tibetian. But Tibetians are quite different from Han.

Yeah, but we are not friendly to each other, maybe just like German and Britain.
Both of us are "one on land ,other in sea".

PS, I had my dinner in a German-style restaurant in Beijing, and t's called paulaner brauhaus.

Arminius1871 In reply to someone1fy [2014-07-26 12:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Mh I try to explain you why it´s like that.

In the early middleage there lived only Gallo-Romans in France. Then when Rome did fall,
the germanic tribe called Franken conquered the Gallo-Romans, and gave this new land
the new name Frankenreich (Frankish Empire). They were a germanic elite ruling in this
land that is later called France.
Karl the Great was also a germanic Franke ruling over France, Germany and Italy. So he was
ethnical a Germanic, but can be seen as founding father for both nations.
