So happy protestants and catholics have good relations these days  I certainly am protestant and not catholic, but i actually would like to have Pope as head of all Christianity. He could be like president ruling autonomic groups. He could represent them but could not dictate what non-catholics could do.
In Finland presidents have often tried to represent entire nation, and many give up their party membership as they become presidents. Pope could not give up being a pope, but its not like he has to compromise between catholic and non-catholic belief, he could just say "this is what X people think and this is what Y people think". Its not like any head of state can claim that his own opinions are shared by entire nation. A good leader would remember the differing opinions.

Medieval Kings could be King of multiple kingdoms, but he might have limited or different authority in some of them. In 2017, Queen Elizabeth is still head of state of Canada, even though she does not have any legal authority in there (i think).  It could be same for Christians. There are numerous examples of someone from place X representing autonomic area Y. Finland is another example, President of Finland represents Åland even though they are autonomic.

Tho I am very disapponted by the modern church, in Germany they helped to break the law by hiding
or accepting illegal mass immigration :/

Sorry what does it mean?^^

k0ritsi In reply to Arminius1871 [2014-05-05 18:01:23 +0000 UTC]

Sola Fide is Latin for "Faith Alone", as in salvation by faith alone, regardless of works. It's one of the Five Solas summarizing the basic beliefs of the Reformation.

Achso ok! Tho it´s not right to use it here, since Luther was anti-roman and prefered
at last German instead of Latin^^

I dunno, that's what the catechism calls it. Also, just because Luther advocated the localization of Bible translations/liturgical language and opposed the Roman Church's corrupt practices doesn't necessarily mean he opposed using Latin in scholarly writings, as was the trend in Europe at the time and several centuries afterward... right?

Not completely, but many see Martin as the first german patriot,
he definitly introduced german church songs, translated the bible
and created the high form of our language and anyway latin became
more important, while French did rise.

One of his better quotes (though I'm not protestant)
I used to read Luther quite frequently, my favourite work of his is "Vom Kriege wider die Türken"... Luther (like all people of his day) didn't know the Turks would never take Vienna and invade the Empire and western Europe, but we in 2014 know that this didn't happen. To them, the Turks were a very serious threat, so his point of view is very interesting for that alone.

Sola fide!

I´m sure they feared them a lot, they were rather powerful.

Well he writes about Islam as a religion first, saying it's a misguided religion full of the worst sins and misery (not accepting Jesus as Saviour is enough to be a heretic), and that Muslims are basically a horde of hopeless heretics... The Ottomans are the most dangerous representation of all that. And he gives a lot of examples of Ottoman brutality in war (esp. in Hungary, which was VERY recent for Luther), and also how they govern their empire in a barbaric way (basically it's a slave empire, according to Luther)... However, Luther also constantly bashes the Pope (even calling him the Anti-Christ ), and also the Jews (but not as horribly as in his infamous work "on the jews and their lies", which he wrote when he thought the jews couldn't be "saved" and should just be destroyed instead)... However, at this point, it seems he still thinks the Jews can be "saved" (converted), but the Muslims are lost.

All the while he naturally praises how true and awesome Christianity is, (not just his own movement, but Christianity in general) and calls for the Emperor Charles V to wage war on the Ottomans, but not because they are Muslims, but because they have invaded and conquered many christian European lands (Byzantium, Hungary, etc.). So even though Luther thinks Muslims are "lost" and "heretics", he also believes they should be allowed to exist if they behave peacefully (which wasn't the case). That's why he doesn't call for a Crusade or a Holy War, but a war of self-defense.

You should read it if you have time, it's really interesting.

in anderen Erdteilen
