Hmm in fact the Germans are very mixed as well. I live in Bavaria,
but got Scandinavian blood as well, doing a DNA test as well.
There are even more Scandinavian genes in Northern Germany
and probably also in former East Prussia, so you can be both.

FOR ODIN!! *Pillages monastery.*
I feel like all those navigable rivers are ripe for the old 'It's free real estate' meme. Really quite impressive how far those raiders and traders went. I have several books on their history and culture that I really must read.
Excellent work, as ever. Keep it up.

Love it! I especially like the brighter colour scheme compared to your older maps. Also, although intricate borders can be fun to make, I rally appreciate the minimalist one youโre using here.ย
Great work!

Marvellous work, it's a really interesting historical document. Yes, they pillaged several southern towns in Iberian Peninsula and got to the Caspian Sea through the "Russian" rivers... It's certain that they found the heat they didn't had in Scandinavia... XD
(*) I've seen a mistake in the south of Iberian Peninsula: it's Medina-Sidonia, not Medina-Sidonid.

Wow cool, I also know that Saxons were on that coast in the 5th century^^

Scipia In reply to Arminius1871 [2019-07-09 19:36:32 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Saxons were in the whole coastal area of the dรฉpartement du Pas-de-Calais, and their Frisians "cousins" were in the French Flanders
Saint-Omer was an harbor at this time, and was settled by the two cultures

Statistically, it's likely x) I just know that I have Flemish, Artesian, Picard, Champenois, Lorrain, Alsacian, Germano-Czech blood x)
And that Louis VII and Aliรฉnor d'Aquitaine (with all Capetians, Carolingians & Merovingians before them) are my ancestors ^^ so Frankish blood too

Hm a Spanish mate once told me that in his region are rune stones and settlement rests,
it was in the northwestern tip as on the map.
But it was probably not as relevant as one might think and disappeared quickly. Sometimes the Vikings
just stayed some months and then shipped on.

I mean, I'm from that northwestern tip and this is the first notice I get that we have rune stones and Viking settlements. Maybe he just confused the Bronze Age petroglyphs and Iron Age ruins that are literally everywhere, the coast included?
About your second paragraph yeah, that's true (some expeditions, like that of Gunrod in 968, who was probably related to Harald II of Norway, stayed a couple of years before being expelled) but I don't know if that is enough to say that there was Nordic settlement like in Britain or Normandy.
Also, I commited a couple of errors in my other comment: it wasn't the archbishopric but just a regular bishopric (the archbishopric didn't exist until 1120) and in the first siege, in 858, the inhabitants of Santiago were forced to pay a ransom to avoid being sacked, so that may be considered raiding, I dunno.
Finally, thanks for the watch!
