Description
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), largest of all extant toothed whales. A real deep diving champion, the only mammal that reaches greather depths is a species of beaked whale . Down in the dark, they prey on squid, which has lead to some artwork out there that I quite simply love. But I digress. The Name does in fact derive from sperm, kinda…. Basically, the head of sperm whales is filled with so called spermaceti, which was originally mistaken for whale sperm (which you could have guessed from that name). So the sperm whale is named after a substance called whale sperm, which isn't actually whale sperm. Great..... While on the topic of etymology, the latin name basically means "big headed blowhole", which sounds like a great insult.
Either way, this substance has lead to the hunting of these animals, as it was used for candles, oil lamps, etc.
