Description

Adjusting to Askr had been difficult for Shez. There was no shortage of familiar faces, yet that only made things more confusing. They were her friends from years ago, which was weird enough, but most of them had no idea who she was! Only Monica, Ingrid and Hilda recognized her. That alternate version of herself was odd too, but he was easy to work with.

Most confusing of all was The Ashen Demon. She was an inhuman terror back in her world, but the Byleth here was a professor. Thoughtful, kind, even somewhat expressive, which really threw Shez for a loop. As a mercenary, Shez was used to seeing old enemies become allies and vice versa, but this switch was particularly hard.

For now, Shez tried to forget all about that and just enjoy this day at the beach. She hadn't been keen on swimwear at first, but she found it light and easy to move in, to the point where she was almost considering wearing it instead of armor. Even though she was supposed to be relaxing, Shez couldn't help but search the shoreline for anyone in trouble, intending to dive in and help them out if she saw anything.

Shez caught sight of a lone figure, and felt an instinctive lurch in her chest. It was Byleth, staring out over the sea. Shez was quick to remember that this wasn't the Ashen Demon she knew from her world.

"Hey, uh... professor. What are you up to out here?" Shez asked her.

"..." she remained silent.

"Hello? Can you hear me?" Shez asked, getting closer and leaning around the woman. She continued to stare at the ocean, as if Shez wasn't there.

Is she ignoring me? But she's supposed to be friendly! Was she just pretending before or something? Shez thought. Hey, her hair is green now. That's weird...

"You dare to scurry over here and interrupt a moment of repose. How very rude," Byleth sneered, in a voice that wasn't her own.

"Huh? Rude? But you're ignoring me!" Shez said, "you're the rude one, if you ask me."

Byleth gave her a side glance. "The arrogance. You believe a small thing such as yourself to be worth acknowledging? I think otherwise."

Something about this strange voice of hers was familiar. Shez could have sworn she heard it somewhere before...

Byleth turned to Shez. She held her head high, staring down her nose at the purple-haired mercenary.

"What's gotten into you?" Shez asked, "you were friendly to me before. What gives?"

"Perhaps there is a way to help you better understand my perspective. Possibly if you were to adopt a size more befitting of your station?" Byleth suggested, a small smirk on her face.

"Huh? What's that supposed to mean?" Shez asked. Byleth suddenly raised her arm, pointing her palm right at Shez's chest, causing her to gasp.

"Yes, I rather like that idea. Then it shall be so!"

Suddenly, a green light surged from Byleth's hand.

"What the?!" Shez raised her elbows to defend herself and scrunched her eyes shut. She felt a warm, radiant light creep over her body, covering her entire form.

What was that? An attack? Shez worried. It didn't hurt, but she wasn't at all happy about this surprise.

"Hey, what was that for?" Shez shouted, "we're allies, aren't we? We shouldn't attack each other!"

She opened her eyes and glared angrily at Byleth. But she found she had to look up a bit to meet her gaze.

She's shorter than me, isn't she? So why am I having to look up?

"We are indeed allies in this world," Byleth sighed, "which vexes me to no end. Our contracts prevent us from injuring each other. But I have discovered... something of a loophole."

Shez didn't know what she was talking about, but she could feel herself sink downward. It was as though the sand was swallowing her up. Shez glanced down to see her feet were still visible above the sand. But they were somehow getting smaller and smaller compared to everything around them.

"What?" Shez uttered, glancing up. Her eyes were level with Byleth's chest. Startled, she stumbled away, almost falling to the ground.

"That stature better suits you," Byleth said, "but you can go smaller still."

"You... you're shrinking me?!" Shez gasped. All manner of thoughts swirled through her head. How is she shrinking her? Why is she shrinking her? How can she stop it? Is this the Byleth she knew?

Somewhere in all that confusion, Shez placed the voice. It was the voice she had used that time when Shez believed her beaten, back in her own world.

"It's you... you're the demon!" Shez realized, but too late. She was below Byleth's waist, much smaller than the other woman. That left her too little to fight back, at Byleth's mercy. Shez turned to run.

"You can run all you like!" the demon laughed, "but it is futile. You will manage only a few steps before I capture you!"

A huge hand suddenly gripped Shez, robbing her of all momentum. She tried to fight it off, but before she could prize even a single digit off her body she was rising into the air. Huge fingers curled round her more and more as her body shrank smaller, binding her like huge rungs of rope. But Shez did not stop fighting, writhing in the demon's grip even as she shrank to a tiny size.

"Let me go!" she snarled, thrashing about but succeeding in eliciting only a laugh from the demon.

"Ha! You are rather more pleasing to behold in this state," she commented, "a tiny mouse of a person. Certainly more suitable for one such as yourself."

"You! You're from my world, aren't you?" Shez asked, "how are you here?!"

"Does the flow of meaningless noise from your mouth never cease?" the demon huffed, "perhaps I wouldn't have to hear it, if I were to make you the size of a grain of sand..."
